Al Gore: "I invented the internets!"
He never actually said this. What he said was that he took part in a commission that laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the internets. At least, that's how I remember it.
No - that's what he did. What he said was:
quote:
During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.
Obviously he said a lot more than that ....

But you're neglecting the context. What was the question that he was asked? The quote, taken completely out of context and with the attitude being spun by the conservatives makes it seem as if Gore were trying to imply that he was spending all-nighters coding the TCP/IP stack while subsisting on nothing more than Hot Pockets and Mt. Dew.
I'm not neglecting context at all. That's why I made it clear that he said plenty more than just that, but was quoting the thing he actually said that was used to create the legend as per the thread topic.
Huntard had already made it clear that he never actually claimed to have 'invented the internet', and since "Only a fool would interpret this to mean that Gore was trying to claim intellectual credit", I didn't think it merited saying a second time.
