Sign me up for this god fella straight away!
Pastor Wiley Drake kicked off this Presidents’ Day Weekend with an email blast to his supporters saying Imprecatory Prayer is now our DUTY and announcing a daily teleconference call to advance the cause. Drake has been an enthusiastic advocate of imprecatory prayer since he announced that God answered his call with the murder of Kansas abortion clinic doctor George Tiller in church last May. George Tiller was far greater in his atrocities than Adolf Hitler, Drake said at the time, so I am happy. I am glad that he is dead. This emboldened him to add the usurper that is in the White House B. Hussein Obama to the list said in his church on Sundays.
I’m known as a birther, you know. I don’t believe Obama was born in this country. He’s an illegal alien and so forth, Wiley told me, matter-of-factly. And so I began to pray what the Bible teaches us to pray and that is imprecatory prayer. An imprecatory prayer is very strong. Imprecatory prayer in Psalms 109, for example, says if you have an evil leader above you, you pray that Satan will stand by his side and you ask God to make his children fatherless and his wife a widow and that his time in office be short Other Psalms say when they speak evil, God will break out their teeth and when they run to do destruction God will break their legs.
To those offended by the idea of praying for death, Wiley shrugs. I’m praying the word of God. I didn’t write it. Don’t get mad at me.
Jesus loves.

From the same article:
But Drake is subtle and even civil compared to the deranged hatemonger who preaches at the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona: Steven L. Anderson.
I hate Barack Obama. You say, well, you just mean you don’t like what he stands for. No, I hate the person. Oh, you mean you just don’t like his policies. No, I hate him I am not going to pray for his good. I am going to pray that he dies and goes to Hell.

Sad
As a believer in Christ, I would/will certainly speak out against this sort of hatred.
And here we have a classic case of someone giving "Christians" a bad name....I know that is overly simplistic but it is what is.
Even Christ stated in Scripture that in the end, he we say to some who proclaimed in His Name, "I never you knew."
This pastor will probabably be one of those that hears that line.

But christians won't speak out about this, or any other event like this done by fellow christians. Why? Because it's bad press for their religion. They will leave it to non-believers to point it out, then weasle out of it somehow.
I'd like to hear Buz or ICANT's take on this. "they aren't true christians."

No, they won't speak out about it because it's not big news! There's always wackjobs within every belief system, and if Christians had to apologize for every single idiot who happens to be a Christian that'd take forever. Sure, they may be using their religious beliefs as an excuse for their hatred, but that still does not mean Christians in general hold these extremist views.
Most evangelical Christians would be as appalled as you are by these pastors, and I know plenty of fundamentalists. If the point of your OP was to show that Christians are all deranged hatemongerers, then it served you poorly that you chose a fringe extremist movement for your example.

And they get away with it because they hide it behind their religion. Since when did it become acceptable to say such things about the President? You brush it off as "no big deal", "he's just a religious wackjob", but someone from his church has already killed in the name of his god. Is it going to be "no big deal" when they assassinate the President?
{ABE} would it be "no big deal" if I went on the news and said exactly the same thing, but didn't hide behind my church?

Re: Sad
Don't tell me scamming people out of millions of dollars in the name of christ is not a big deal. We should be seeing christians get together to protest the hell out of guys like Peter Popoff and Benny Hinn instead of worrying if them faggots could marry each other or not.
Don't you find it a bit odd that the only people exposing these frauds for who they are are skeptics like James Randi and Danny Korem? Christians should be up in arms against these crooks who are using jesus's name to make money, amen. But instead we only hear crickets chirping from the christian churches.

Re: Sad
I didn't say it's not a big deal. I'm just saying it's nothing new. Nutjobs are, sadly, a part of any society. The reason these nutjobs get away with what they're saying is because we have freedom of speech, and nobody really takes them seriously.
Christians (in general, and in my experience) are not "protecting" them just because they're Christians. Christians come in a variety of denominations, and individuals have differing opinions on political issues, and just about every issue you can think of. I think most Christians would disagree with the extremists you've cited, but I doubt if many would feel outraged because they exist.
Think about it. With all the differing denominations and points of view among the Christian religion, each individual Christian already disagrees with just about every other Christian on the planet, to some extent. Joe the Presbyterian probably thinks the Mormons are a bunch of heretics, the Catholics a bunch of pope-worshipers, and Jim Jones a quacky cult leader. When little old Joe hears of pastor Drake and his hate speech against Obama, he's just gonna shake his head and lump this guy in with the rest of the oddball "Christians" that aren't really "Proper Christians" anyway.
As for the congregations quacks like Drake serve, I imagine they've gotta be as weird in the head as he is, and hopefully they do not represent a substantial demographic of religous people.
Respectfully,

Substantial enough for Dr. Tiller, whom pastor dickface, er Drake, says is glad he is dead
I am fully aware that not all christians feel this way. But I don't give 2 shits about those christians. They don't bother me one bit because, *GASP* they keep their religion where it should be: to themselves, in private.

If you are claiming that all evangelical Christians who wear their beliefs on their sleeves support the murder of doctors, and the assassination of liberal presidents, then be prepared to back up your statement with fact.
In the real world, there are plenty of door knocking, evangelizing, openly religious people who are not extremists (at least, within the context of this discussion).
You are being paranoid, my friend. Extremists, like Scott Roeder, or these crazy pastors are a threat, make no mistake about it! But they're not representative of the general religious population.

We should be seeing People getting together to protest these kinds of things. Don't lump all the blame onto the Christian population when a few conmen decide to make money off of gullible believers' emotions.
And as I said in my response to Hooah: I agree that these are scandalous scumbags. I think the violent extremists are a serious threat. I just think Hooah is wrong to smear Christianity for having a few quacks. I'm sure you both could find plenty of more legit ways to express your fear of religous people.

What? I'm sure glad you are sticking up for these fucks. I never once said anything about lumping ALL of them together, but there IS a large enough demographic for them to be of considerable concern. THEY KILL PEOPLE.

1. When did I "smear christianity"?
2. These nutjobs are representing a particular brand of religion which a good chunk of the country I live in, and pay taxes to, also shares. I would understand your P.O.V. if they were practicing a discreet religion with a relatively small demographic, but that is not the case here. Sarah Palin anyone? She is the fundy all the fundies clamour for.

Cool down a little, bro. Just because I'm trying to be the voice of reason here, doesn't mean I support hate speech and murder.
hooah212002 writes:
THEY KILL PEOPLE
Curiously, I know and grew up among lots of evangelical Christians who are outspoken about their beliefs, and not one of them has ever killed anyone. I think everyone of them would be just as opposed to killing abortion doctors or Obama, even though I know many of them disagree with the president. Why aren't they rioting in the street right now because of some crazy extremist pastor in Orange County? Gee, I don't know. Has Fox News done a report on the guy? Because until media really starts spinning this, I doubt if they'll know about it.
hooah writes:
What is this "real world" you speak of?
The world where your average churchgoer is not a drooling lunatic off to kill the president.
hooah writes:
No, I'm afraid not. You are just too passive, or you share the same views.
Oh I see. Now I'm an extremist. I, with liberal leanings and pro-choice sentiments, am apparently a murder advocate because I happen to believe that most evangelical Christians are not dangerous (maybe a bit deluded at worst).
hooah writes:
When did I "smear christianity"?
I thought that was the purpose of this thread, to show how dangerous fundies are by demonstrating an extreme. You claim they are "bad press for [Christianity]", which indeed they would be if every single person saw their actions as an example of Christianity, rather than fundamentalism taken to the extreme.
hooah writes:
Sarah Palin anyone? She is the fundy all the fundies clamour for
While we both may think Sarah Palin is a media whore, and disagree with her on her politics, this is not the kind of fundy we're talking about in this thread. AFAIK, she has not advocated killing doctors or the president. While it might upset you that there are people in this country who hold opposing views, lumping them in with dangerous madmen is hardly fair.
Respectfully,
-Meldinoor
