Republicans leading America toward a theocracy
A legislator from Virginia cites a passage from the Bible that says if a woman has a child with some kind of disability, then she must have aborted her first pregnancy based on dramatic evidence.
The Virginia delegate (Bob Marshall R, Manassas) who made the comment went on to cite Exodus 13:2 as his authority, and passed this information on to Governor McDonnell as a reason to stop support of Planned Parenthood. Governor McDonnell says he will revoke support for Planned Parenthood in Virginia, but he did not say whether Marshall’s rendering of the facts swayed his decision.
Earlier this month, Governor McDonnell changed the employment discrimination laws in Virginia to exclude gays from employment discrimination protection based on an edict from God that claims gays are an abomination.
Here is a somewhat of a transcript of what bob Marshall said:
The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion who have handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the firstborn of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children. In the Old Testament, the first-born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment, Christians would suggest, and with the knowledge they have from faith has been verified by a study by the Virginia Commonwealth University. First abortions of the first pregnancy are much more damaging to the woman than latter abortions.
"We are dealing with an attempt to defund, frankly, a malevolent organization. And I say that because you know people by their fruits.
In 1960 (to) ’65, the out-of-wedlock birthrate for blacks was 25 percent. I think it was about 23 percent in 1960 it was 5 percent for all races.
Now it’s 40 percent. It’s 72 percent for blacks, 51 percent for Latinas. These are the fruits of planned parenthood, OK? Nothing else.
There you have it folks: politicians are using the bible more and more to make their decisions.
And, as a retort to what Buz said to me in my other thread: please, oh please, show me one instance of someone taking away civil liberties NOT in the name of the bible. Show me where someone in a position of authority has used logic, reason, science and the like, to harm people. Show me where an atheist has don harm in the name of the FSM, or in the name of atheism. Show me a true "mad scientist" that harms people in the name of science.
I can't ever find those instances, can you?

I do not know of any compelling evidence for anthropomorphic patriarchs controlling human destiny from some hidden celestial vantage point, but it would be madness to deny the existence of physical laws."

Here in Illinois, next Tuesday our state congress will vote on a measure that will remove LGBT people from our discrimination laws at the work place. In other words, if this measure passes, it will no longer be a violation of the law to discriminate someone based on sexual orientation at the work place. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
Edit.
Oh, the guy that introduced this bill said he did it out of his religious conviction.

Ummmm....except there are federal laws preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation in the work place. Not sure what law you are reading in Illinois? Do you have a link?

This is not the first state I've heard of doing this.

Re: Poor Babes
My big heart BLEEDS for helpless crybabies who's looser agenda hasn't enough public support to elect representatives who will do their bidding.
The American way has always been to get up the votes to determine policy. What do you expect? Some dictator of your thinking taking over and outlaw the republic?
So what if it's a religious conviction, so long as the majority goes along for whatever reason? We all have our reasons for voting the way we do. Athiests want their way and theists want theirs. Likely a lot of athiests in your state will vote with the religious one simply because it makes good sense to them.

Re: Poor Babes
There's that christian compassion for the plight of those worse off than ourselves that we're all used to.
Of course, what should we expect from someone who worships such a hatemonger as, well any of the abrahamic gods, really?

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus. -- Thomas Jefferson
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus -- and non-believers. -- Barack Obama
We see monsters where science shows us windmills. -- Phat

Ok, so now we know Buzsaw would have supported slavery, segregation, women's non-right to vote, etc. Good to know.
So what if it's a religious conviction, so long as the majority goes along for whatever reason?
Let me try to be as clear as I can on this.
The only way we can ensure that EVERYONE has the freedom to worship or not worship anyway they want is for the state to be completely neutral on the issue. This means that the elected officials must stay neutral at all times.
I know you have a hard time sympathizing and empathizing for the minority because as it stands you belong to the majority who are in power, which are white protestant men. But try for once in your life imagine yourself in the place of someone belonging to a minority group. Try for once in your life that you are not a white protestant man. Would you want the majority to vote into law whatever the hell they want just because it is their religious conviction?
Remember, buz, in some muslim countries they still execute people for converting to christianity. Christians in some countries still have no right in that they don't get protection from the police and their communities terrorized by the muslim majority.
What you are advocating is essentially the same thing. You advocate that the protestant majority could do whatever the hell they want through the vote (a politically correct way of saying tyranny of the majority).
So, buz, again, please try for once in your life to empathize with others. The lack of empathy has in the past led to countless tragic events, including but not limited to the Holocaust and the Trail of Tears. Both these examples were widely supported by the majority through the power of majority vote.

Can someone break down the legaleze for me? It appears to put religion and LGBT in the same category?
Is it saying that people CAN be discriminated against for religious reasons, but only by religious/non-profit groups?
Amends the Illinois Human Rights Act. In the Employment Article, provides that the Act does not apply to a religious organization, association, or society or any nonprofit institution or organization operated, supervised, or controlled by or in conjunction with a religious organization, association, or society with respect to employment qualifications based on religion or sexual orientation. Effective January 1, 2011.

It roles back the Illinois employment non-discrimination law. It gives exception to religious and non-profit organizations in regard to sexual orientation. In other words, they still can't discriminate against race, religion, or gender, but they can discriminate against sexual orientation given that they are either a religious institution or operated by a religious institution.

Have we forgotten the Iowan republican state reps that tried to introduce a bill that would exclude LGBT students from the anti-bullying law?

Holy. Fucking. Shit!
Maybe the sponsors were notorious bullies in Junior High and want their sons to have something to do at school.

If that were the case more power to them, so far as due process of the republic has not been violated. I would certainly work harder to have reps of a different mindset elected.
