This New York Times opinion article describes some rather sneaky Christain proselytizing. Introductory paragraph:
Robert Wright in the New York Times writes:
Last Friday night a New York Times headline underwent an online transformation. The article formerly known as A Christian Overture to Muslims Has Its Critics acquired a new billing: A Dispute on using the Koran as a Path to Jesus.
Gee, where else have we seen any similar Christian sneakiness and misrepresentation?

As a Christian, I would look upon missionaries placing themselves in harm's way as standard behaviour. We are dealing with peoples' immortal souls, and we shouldn't be afraid of conflict - if just one person is saved, then it has been worth the fight, because that is one more soul in heaven, not hell. Non-Christians just do not appreciate what is at stake, and we have to continue envagelising in every corner of the world despite their protestations.
If you read through the comments to that NYT piece, you can see these sentiments repeated over and over again.
Now no longer a Christian, I have to ask... do those comments scare the fuck out of you as much as they do me???

Yes, very scary. Most evangelicals I have met take very seriously their responsibility for spreading the good word and take a "the ends justify the means" approach. They deny any responsibility for the damage they cause because they are doing the Lord's work, so their actions are never tempered by shame or guilt. Bias, lying, cheating, stealing, they're all good because it's all in the service of the Lord.

Missionaries are a pox
I think that is one of the worst part of christianity. They destroy cultures and lives for their own glorification.
My wife's family knows some missionaries and I am not well liked when the issue of them comes up. My wife has requested I keep my mouth shut but I can only for so long.
I die a little inside every time I hear about a church group that goes to Africa and is so proud because they helped the poor people by building a church and bringing them to jesus.
Fuck that. Build a clean water supply. Provide them with modern ovens that don't require charcoal. Build a medical clinic. But fuck you and your church.
Sorry about the language. The whole thing gets me a bit worked up.

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

Re: Missionaries are a pox
The Franciscan missionaries built 20+ missions along the California coast to save souls.
During the mission era (1769-1834) the death rate in that mission zone was on the close order of 90%.
But they saved their souls...

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

They must have been slacking off.
Previous missionary efforts in central New Mexico among the Piro Indians resulted in a virtual 100% extermination rate in little over a century.

The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas - uncertainty, progress, change - into crimes.
Salman Rushdie
This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It’s us. Only us. - the character Rorschach in Watchmen

From the NYT
The article formerly known as A Christian Overture to Muslims Has Its Critics acquired a new billing: A Dispute on Using the Koran as a Path to Jesus.
What is this article doing in Creation/Evolution In The News forum? Oh thats right, another opportunity to bash Christianity.

Then start your own ministry and go over there, see how far you get.
An evolutionist with a rabid hatred for Christianity, no news there, ho hum.

Another evolutionist on a crusade against Christianity. And you're all about science, yeh that's the ticket,
And maybe you and your buds here in the echo chamber even believe that. No one else is fooled though.

Your ravings about an "echo chamber" are becoming repetitive in a way that is probably funnier than you intended.

I find it rather ironic then that most evolutionists are in fact theists of some kind, and in the US largely Christian.
What was your point again?

wild claims
90% death rate from Franciscan mission? You have made yet another wild assed claim for which you have failed to back up. I guess for you and the choir you preach to that counts as fact.
