Networks don't give a shit about right leaning and left leaning, they care about who's watching and try to guage what their opinions on issues may be. They then focus on bringing those stories to gain viewers. This feeds into my long standing suspicion that the extreme right wing talking heads (e.g. Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh) don't really believe in the stuff coming out of their mouth. They are in it for the $$$$. At least with Chris Mathews, Olberman, and Maddow you know that they actually believe in what they are saying whether you agree or disagree with their opinions.

....as those are opinion columns, or parody skits like the Colbert Report. Oh how I wish the people who watched the shows on Fox (Beck, Hannity etc..) knew that they weren't watching actual news programs...... "Some people think God is an outsized, light-skinned male with a long white beard, sitting on a throne somewhere up there in the sky, busily tallying the fall of every sparrow. Othersfor example Baruch Spinoza and Albert Einsteinconsidered God to be essentially the sum total of the physical laws which describe the universe. I do not know of any compelling evidence for anthropomorphic patriarchs controlling human destiny from some hidden celestial vantage point, but it would be madness to deny the existence of physical laws."-Carl Sagan "Show me where Christ said "Love thy fellow man, except for the gay ones." Gay people, too, are made in my God's image. I would never worship a homophobic God." -Desmond Tutu

This feeds into my long standing suspicion that the extreme right wing talking heads (e.g. Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh) don't really believe in the stuff coming out of their mouth. They are in it for the $$$$. I had an opportunity to meet Tucker Carlson on a radio show (long story on how we both ended up in the studio at the same time) and I got to listen to him talk and hang out casually. I had, at that time, only known him because of the John Stewart ass reaming he took. And I noticed, he really was sincere about his point of view. Him and the DJ were/are good friends and when they would go to commercial they would keep talking about the topic. Tucker didn't have to be "on" but he still maintained the same position. I thought when the DJ went off the air he would say, "Na I'm just fucking with you, I don't believe any of the shit I just said." But he didn't. And he was dressed conservative. Same duffy hair cut. Real fucking nerd. I wouldn't say Beck believes what comes out of his mouth, but I do believe Hannity, Limbaugh and O' Reilly believe every word. They just happen to be reallllly good at pushing the right buttons and saying it in a way that adds the shock value. I will say this, they are very, very good at what they do. I'd say 80% real, 20% acting. Glenn Beck I'd say is the other way around, 20/80.
At least with Chris Mathews, Olberman, and Maddow you know that they actually believe in what they are saying whether you agree or disagree with their opinions. Yeah these guys I'd say 80/20, too. They're legit in their opinions. But there is also one fact to remember, that every talking head on TV is human and is also exposed to the same type of media that everyone else is exposed to. None of these guys have some secret information about how anything works, they're just as lead by the propaganda of left vs right as the general public. That's why those guys seem sincere, because they picked a side on an illusionary line. - Oni

quote: Huh? What on earth does that have to do with anything? No, one method of checking for potential bias is to see who gets in the media. That is, does the media go for those on the right more than the left? The other way around? A balanced take? Well, that has been done and, as expected, the media shows a significant right-side bias. The Sunday morning policy shows, for example, are much more likely to have conservatives on than liberals. When conservatives are brought on, they are much more likely to be the only guest in a dialogue with the host. Liberals (and they are very rare on these programs) are usually put on a panel...and on top of that, there will be more conservatives on the panel. The most common guest? McCain. During the health care debates, not a single guest was offered a position on any policy programming that was a supporter of single-payer, despite that being what the majority of the population wanted. Do you have any evidence of "liberal bias"? Rrhain Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time. Minds are like parachutes. Just because you've lost yours doesn't mean you can use mine.

quote: Hi onifre, Networks (or more pertinently their owners and employees) don't need to care about left/right politics in order to be biased. If their aim is to maximize advertising revenue, and most advertising revenue is sourced from capitalist enterprises who prefer to place their adverts in programs providing a rosy view of the capitalist business model, then a right wing bias will arise naturally without intention on the part of broadcasters. I believe that people on the right have a conception that the media is biased in favour of liberals because the networks are keen to be culturally liberal. They are happy to have gay men (not gay women so often, for some reason), an ethnic diversity of actors and presenters (more or less), perhaps a non-Christian or two, but you will rarely see an interview with an American leftist intellectual of economic matters. I believe that it is due to the fact that the cultural impacts of the left have become attractive to marketers because they appeal to the audience while not challenging the capitalist model of organization, while the economic ideas of the left are a direct challenge and are so not to be countenanced. All of this means that we can have pro-capitalist bias at the same time as a culturally anti-right bias; resulting in accusations that the media is both pro-liberal and pro-conservative. That's basically what the classic 90s Benetton ad campaign was. Economically capitalist while culturally progressive (at least that's what it was intended to be). The prediction of the model is that you will rarely if ever get a KKK member or David Harvey on screen but a Tom Friedman or Bono should be ok. I agree with an earlier poster that Fox is basically a one-off freak show departure from my model! Cheers Mick

I don't think Fox is a one-off freak show, they do fit with a part of the population (e.g: Bible belt) so it only makes sense that at least 1 channel takes this market. It would have been way more strange if no channels at all tried to take this market. For the rest of what you say, I think I agree.

Here's some raw footage from a recent demonstration in front of Congress. You probably heard there were racist expressions from the crowd, right? Didn't happen but the media made out that it did:
No webpage found at provided URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0UIUdDMbeU&feature=player_embedded#at=155 It's also not just attacks and misrepresentations, it's ignoring a huge part of the American public. The first Tea Party in Washington was enormous but you missed that coverage, didn't you? And at that same time there were big tea parties elsewhere in the country, a very big one in L.A. for instance, but I didn't track down pictures of that one. Here's Washington:

Error 404 Not Found Funny how protest marches are regarded as great expressions of American politics unless the Right does them, then they are either smeared and misrepresented (such as by calling them racist or even "mob psychology" as nwr just referred to Republicans on the Marxism thread) or ignored completely. Faith it isn't even worth pointing out your lack of perception or reality. No matter what kind of evidence you are given for any subject, you will ignore it and continue to live in your world of fantasy.
All I will say is all of these gatherings were covered quite well by the media and the numbers were underwhelming at best. Nice of you to claim that sitting members of Congress are lying. Teapartiers have shown extreme racism. One of the teapartier leaders claims there is no racism, but there is a photo of him with a sign that says "niggar". He was to stupid to realize it we spelled wrong Do you want me to find the pic for you and his interview denying racism? Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

Did you watch the you tube link? What was called racism by the media was clearly not when you see the video.

Faith do you truly believe that one video caught everything. Can you hear everyone? It shows your detachment from reality that you believe this video is in any way definitive.

I dunno. When I see protesters carrying signs like the one that calls Obama a "Kenyan," that tends to set off my racism detector. Even if the gy carrying the sign claims he's not being racist. Many racists don't think their being racist - they just don't like (insert racial slur here).
And that doesn't even cover the video I saw last week of teabaggers hurling racial epithets like the n-bomb at black Democrats. If it looks like a duck, smells like a duck, and is in a group with other ducks, I'm betting it's a duck, even if it tries to honk like a goose.
