I have not seen any evidence of a political bias, nor any evidence that political leanings are even considered in the hiring practices.
But does the fish see the water in which it swims?
One method of checking for potential bias is a simple poll to find out how many university professors are Republicans and how many are Democrats. You should be able to find the figures on the web.

The economic departments would probably have more libertarians than other departments. The sociology department might have more socialists than other departments.
The economics departments generally have a higher number of Marxists.
As for sociology? I avoided it totally during over 12 years of college.

...even though the overwhelming majority of viewpoints are identifiably conservative in nature.
As opposed to what?
Neutral? Or liberal?

I believe that on things like the nightly news of the four major networks, should strive for neutrality. Neutrality in reporting means just presenting the facts without injecting a spin.
A worthy goal. But the three major networks have abandoned that goal in favor of the liberal side of things.
Don't forget, in many polls about 50% of people questioned say they are conservative, while only about 30% say they are liberal.
Perhaps Fox just provides some necessary balance. Otherwise, all the networks would be the same and that's not very good.

Returning to the topic
Conservatives tend to see the majority of the media as biased toward the liberal viewpoint.
Liberals also frequently see parts of the media as biased toward the conservative viewpoint.
Studies have shown that each side is likely to see opinions contrary to their own as biased.
As perhaps 30% of people self-identify as liberals and 50% self-identify as conservatives, perhaps the conservatives have a stronger case.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: Does public radio have a liberal bias?
Most elections lately have split the country very nearly in half, with near 50% on each side.
The vast majority of the traditional media folks come from only one side.
Is it any wonder that the other side feels there is a bias?
Here are some details:

Re: Does public radio have a liberal bias?
Nice analogy, but it fails miserably.
The whole job of a political journalist is to find out accurate facts about politics. When they notice that (let's be fair) 95% of conservative talking points are crap, then not only are they going to reject the talking points, they're going to think that if there was any merit at all to conservatism they'd have some talking points that weren't crap.
This would be true if those political journalists were unbiased. Clearly they are not. 80% or more of them vote Democrat and are well left of center. The mainstream media culture as a whole is left of center.
Perhaps those of you who also are left of center assume that your's is the only correct position, and that you are mainstream. This is not accurate.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.
