Queensrych, Testament, Metallica (original not the lame new stuff), Megadeth, Pantera. I know I am forgetting a ton.
More "modern" metal I have been enjoying is Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Disturbed.
I actually still enjoy 2 christian metal groups Disciple and Thousand Foot Krutch.
I recently picked up an album from a band I had never heard before called Halestorm. They have a really sassy female lead singer and their songs are pretty cool. I'm not quite tired of it yet which is a good sign for a new (to me) group.

Remembering more
I can't believe I forgot in my original list Tool and A Perfect Circle. How it is possible to forget my favorite and IMO the most artistic and sophisticated metal bands ever will be a mystery to me.
I also forgot Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, their un/holy offspring Audioslave.

Re: Remembering more
Ah, now I can join in Some of my favourites here, though I don't know A Perfect Circle. I like my rock melodic or psychedelic. So most thrash is out (apart from early Metallica and the like, which is just too important historically to ignore). I've always found death metal vocals the biggest waste of time - give me Maynard's venting every time...
Maynard is the lead singer in A Perfect Circle also. They are basically Tool Lite although they do occasionally have some hard stuff. The musicality of A Perfect Circle seems to be greater than that of Tool but you can still rock out to Tool.
