HEard some Nightwish, the others in the list don't sound familiar.
I have a mild hearing problem: I cannot understand lyrics easily. I can hear them, I just can't process the sounds into words as easily as most people are able to. By contrast, I can pick out individual instruments and so on from a song pretty easily.
This means that I listen to music primarily for the sound, not the lyrics. For this reason I like a lot of pure instrumentals ("Ex Nihilo" from Dark Tranquility is great; "Whoracle" from In Flames; I also listen to lots and lots of original scores from movies and such), and often have no idea what a given song is actually about. Which is occasionally embarrassing.

That sucks. It would be ironic if the cause was due to your taste in music.
My parents all the time use to say I would go deaf listening to metal though.
Maybe there isnt anything wrong with your hearing....no one can understand what any of those vocalists are singing in death metal!

I typically am fond of Viking/folk/Nordic/pagan metal. It's comparable to black metal in the sense of sound (for the most part) but instead of the typical Satanic background it focuses on old European folklore and religions. Pretty cool. Heh, even as an atheist you feel the spirit of Odin flow through you!

1 is pretty decent. 2, awful vocals. 3, eh.
I just hate cookie monster vocals. Could never get into that style. Bathory sounds too primitive for me. Need incredible production.
I did like the first though.

Yeah you gotta have the taste for it. In the heart of every black/viking metal fan, the production quality is almost expected to be low to give the atmosphere of it. I understand the vocals, I too am not a fan of such style but I can tolerate them. At first I hated them but now you just expect it. But there are bands under the same genre with clean vocals and good production:
Tyr - Hold the Heathen Hammer High

It doesn't seem to be a problem with my hearing, per se - I can pass hearing tests, I can hear quiet sounds, etc. I can hear the vocals, but they just don;t get processed as language unless I really concentrate. Something similar happens with lots of background noise, especially where lots of people are talking. You can be talking to me from a foot away, and I might not be able to understand you even though I can hear you. It's rather lame.
And oddly enough, I don't crank my metal (or other music) very high. I don't want to add more issues to my hearing - I try to use lower volumes with noise isolation or cancellation headphones so that I can still hear the fullness of the music without popping my eardrums.
Yes, I'm weird.

Yes Rahvin, it is quite ironic isn't it. I should have mentioned that I also listen to a bunch of Christian metal although that field has historically left allot to be desired but if anyone is interested there are a handful of quality Christian bands that I would put on par with the secular ones and have even toured with....
Living Sacrifice (early death metal/now metalcore)
Soul Embrace
Extol (unbelievable melodic/black metal)
Antestor
Believer (old school death metal, think Violence or Antropy)
and....probably my favorite
Saviour Machine (goth metal)

I also have a place in my heart that I love for the female vocals in metal...bands like Theatre of Tragedy, Cradle of Filth, ect.

Re: Remembering more
I can't believe I forgot in my original list Tool and A Perfect Circle...
I also forgot Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, their un/holy offspring Audioslave.
Ah, now I can join in Some of my favourites here, though I don't know A Perfect Circle. I like my rock melodic or psychedelic. So most thrash is out (apart from early Metallica and the like, which is just too important historically to ignore). I've always found death metal vocals the biggest waste of time - give me Maynard's venting every time...

Maynard is the lead singer in A Perfect Circle also. They are basically Tool Lite although they do occasionally have some hard stuff. The musicality of A Perfect Circle seems to be greater than that of Tool but you can still rock out to Tool.

Ah yes, Epica. The guitarist and growly vocalist is actually from the same city I'm from. Met him a few times, nice fellow.
My favourite band? Iron Maiden! For the rest I like classic metal, and some newer stuff. Not really into all the "growly stuff" but will listen to it from time to time. Oh yeah, a great american band I just thought of: Iced Earth!
Anyway, Up The Irons!

Love Maiden, but their last two had production problems. You would think with all the technology, producers available and th gazillion dollars they have they could do much better.
Their new album is already done, summer the release. As for Iced Earth, first few albums with Barlow as vocalist were great. The stuff with Ripper I thought was ok and their last album with Barlow back was decent. Band seems to be rehashing same songs over and over.
