I've actually heard Epica, and they're pretty good.
Ah yes, Epica. The guitarist and growly vocalist is actually from the same city I'm from. Met him a few times, nice fellow.
My favourite band? Iron Maiden! For the rest I like classic metal, and some newer stuff. Not really into all the "growly stuff" but will listen to it from time to time. Oh yeah, a great american band I just thought of: Iced Earth!
Anyway, Up The Irons!

Love Maiden, but their last two had production problems. You would think with all the technology, producers available and th gazillion dollars they have they could do much better.
Hmm yes, I hope their new one will be a it better on that front.
Their new album is already done, summer the release.
Yep, I know. Looking forward to it!
As for Iced Earth, first few albums with Barlow as vocalist were great. The stuff with Ripper I thought was ok and their last album with Barlow back was decent. Band seems to be rehashing same songs over and over.
I agree. It seems like the inspiration is gone a bit towards the later stuff. Hope they find themselves again. Or really, Hope Schaffer finds himself again.

My favourite Dethklok song + bonus!
This is by far my favourite!
Check out the wicked lyrics!
Ride...
Ride...
Ride...
Ride...
Thunder...
Thunder...
Thunder...
Thunder...
Thunderhorse!
Thunderhorse!
Thunderhorse!
Thunderhorse!
Revenge!
Revenge!
Revenge!
Thunder...
Horse
Thunder...
Horse
Thunder...
Horse
Thunder...
Horse
Thunder, Thunder...
Thunder, Thunder, Thunder...
Thunder...
Thunder...
Horse
Thunderhorse!
Thunderhorse!
-----
As a bonus, some nice Epica:
The thing he says in Dutch at the beginning is: Do we live in a dreamworld, or is this reality? The Phantom Agony!

I think either Mermaider (it's about Mermaid murder)or Awaken Mustakrakish is my favorite.
Kastratikron is just effing hilarious.
And of course, since tax day was just a little while ago, Detharmonic was very appropriate.
Oh yes, most of their songs are completely fucking cool. I just love the the fact they made a song with just four words as lyrics.
Listening to more Nightwish after the recommendations here and (coincidentally) from another friend. Starting to really, really like them.
Then you might like to know that the vocalist on the first albums (up to and including Once), Tarja Turunen, is no longer in the band.

Wow! Thanks Huntard.
You're welcome. Up the irons!
Cleveland, OH is the closest but still about 3.5 hours away. Would certainly be worth the trip no doubt.
Oh yes, well worth it I would say.
