It's about 3,400 miles from Providence RI to San Diego CA
Google Maps Beta Bike Route
I've set myself a challenge to ride 1000 miles this summer, and have already passed the first 100, working on the second.
Thought of making a challenge, and then thought a team challenge would be better.
The idea is that we add up our miles to see how long it takes us, figuratively speaking, to move our hypothetical rider from Providence to San Diego.
3,400 - 100 = 3, 300 to go.
Enjoy.

Count me in
I normally cycle to work and back everyday, that's 8.7 miles a day times 5 days a week makes for 43.5 miles a week, not counting the cycling I'll do each weekend. Next week is a week off for me, so no cycling then (I'll be on holiday in Spain), but after that, it's 43.5 miles a week you can detract for me.
So, counting this week, that's 3300 - 43.5 = 3256.5 miles.

Stationary Bikes
Do stationary bikes count as well? Just curious.
I'm not a consistent rider, but I will provide my piddly miles when possible. We'll see how well I do this summer.

Re: Count me in
Good start.
My trip odometer is at 115.6 now since I began, so that's another 15.6 miles.
It's ~9.5 miles to work and back, but I can't do it every day (have days when I need a car). So if I get 4 days a week it's 38 miles a week. This is on my mountain bike converted to commuter bike (with panier racks so I can use it shopping).
My overall odometer reading is 7,916 miles so I might break 9,000 by year end.
I need to get my road bike fixed up (it's originally a cross bike, so heavy frame, but with 700 mm rims I can put on skinny tires for minimum drag), and then I can use that on weekends. There's a trail a block away (old railroad) that I take to work and it has a total length of 19 miles.
Enjoy.
3256.5 - 15.6 = 3240.9 miles

Re: Stationary Bikes
Don't see why not, the exercise is the same, and they do have odometers to track the miles.
This trip is a fantasy ride as well (and the flat roads here would not compare with riding through the rockies).
Welcome aboard.
Enjoy.

A fellow cyclist huh.
I cycle everywhere in London. It's the only way to travel. Average about a 100 miles per week.

3,140 miles to go
So I'll put you down for 100 for last week.
3240.9 miles -100 = 3,140 miles to go
Enjoy.

Re: 3,140 miles to go
Since my trip to Spain didn't happen because of some stupid Icelandic volcano (first they take our money, now they take my vacation! Damn you Icelandians!) I shall be cycling this week also. I'll report at the end of the week how much cycling was done, since I do still have the week off.

Re: 3,081 miles to go
Hi Huntard,
Hope your riding was enjoyable in spite of the conditions.
My odometer is now at 175.1 (17.5% of goal) so this means I've added (175.1-115.6) = 59.4 miles this week and we have (3,140-59) = 3,081 to go.
It also means I am close to 8,000 miles on this odometer overall.
The weather was too lousy for riding to work on two days, but I got out on a nice 25 mile ride today.
Enjoy

odometer milestone
Yep, that's 8,000 miles turned on my odometer today
Along this nice scenic little rail-trail section.
I started at 7,801 and I now have 8,003 for a total of 202 miles so far on my 1,000 mile goal (20%).
My trip odometer is at 202.5, so I've added 27.1 miles since message 9, so there is (3081-27) = 3,054 miles to go.
Enjoy.

Re: odometer milestone
Hey RAZD!
Count me in. I've been railroaded into participating in a local duathlon (the biking portion of a relay), so I've been piling on the miles for the last week or so. Last week=60 miles. This week=90 miles. This coming week won't be so heavy, but my wife and I have a long ride coming up pretty soon (50-60 miles) so I'll keep you posted on that too. I'll probably be good for about 60-80 miles a week if the weather's nice...
Good idea!
Have a good one.
{abe}: Not much shoulder on that road, there fella. Careful ... my wife's taken to wearing a neon-yellow jersey when riding on certain roads around here. Motorists just don't seem to pay attention (surprise!) to anything on two wheels.

another rider, 2,904 miles to go.
Hi Apothecus, thanks.
Last week=60 miles. This week=90 miles.
That's 150 miles off 3,054 = 2,904 miles to go.
Not much shoulder on that road, there fella. Careful ...
Actually what you are looking at is a bike lane on a rail trail. I'm thinking of end-for-ending the trail this weekend (I live just off it and work just off it), it is 19 miles end to end iirc, so that would be 38 miles.
my wife's taken to wearing a neon-yellow jersey when riding on certain roads around here.
I find flags work too, especially if they lean to the left.
my wife and I have a long ride coming up pretty soon (50-60 miles)
A metric century? (100 km = 62.14 miles)
My riding mate does a birthday ride in august, one mile for each year, and this year should be 62 miles (he's a young whipper-snapper).
Enjoy

Whoops! 2835.5 miles to go
I seem to have forgotten to update my progress here.
In the week where I was supposed to go to spain, but couldn't because of that damn volcano, I cycled about 25 miles (yeah, I know, but it was my week off, so I did other fun stuff).
Last week was back to normal again, so that's another 43.5 miles
In short 2,904 - 25 - 43.5 = 2835.5 miles to go.

Will be joining you
The vagaries of life are going to put me back on a bicycle seat.
Last week I had all of my medical work done and decided I am getting fat. My BMI is over 29 and my waist is huge. Also, though medicated, my blood pressure is still a little high.
Then I had the rude awakening. I was ticketed for drinking and driving. Not much over but enough to get the ticket. It is only a civil affense for first time here in Wisconsin, but on June 16 I lose my license for 6 months. There is a fairly liberal occupational license, but I need to give the state a schedule of when I will be driving.
We live in the country and the nearest anything is 5 miles away. I have decided this is a perfect opportunity to drop 20 lbs and get in shape. At 47 years I better start now.
I have a Giant Kronos it is over 20 years old, but it was a good bike in its time. It is in the shop now being tuned up. I haven't ridden it in 8 years so I told them to go over everything.
Starting next week I should be putting a couple miles on it and hopefully build up to even more.

Get an attorney NOW! This will cost you $1800-2000 more on your insurance every 6 months for 3 years. The breathalyzer is a piece of shit, none of them are warrented to determine BAC. There can be over 100 different compounds in your breath that those things will read as BAC.
It makes many assumptions and decides you are average, but you may not be in which case a close reading is probably BS. Most people don't fight this crap because of the upfront cost. Don't be cheap here, in the long run you will pay more if you plead guilty.
Don't let this stop your plans for getting in shape, that's always a good idea.
Myself I don't ride a bike, just a Triumph Bonneville, and for staying in shape do a lot of canoe tripping, fishing, and mineral collecting.
