Re: another rider, 2,904 miles to go.
Actually what you are looking at is a bike lane on a rail trail.
Ah, I see that now. Should have used a little power of perspective, in that no respectable automobile would have fit to the right of that broken line. We also have a nice long rail line in this area (60 miles), and it's a beautiful ride, called "The Woebegon Trail". Too bad I can't stand Garrison Keillor. It's not that his radio show sucks (at least not all the time), but that his voice just drones on and on until I inadvertently nod off. So no Prairie Home Companion in the car for this Minnesotan...
I find flags work too, especially if they lean to the left.
I'll check to see if my local bike shop has flags, and if they're sorted as to political affiliation. I assume left leaning flags are taxed at a higher rate...
Oh, add another 20 miles for this morning for me. Thanks.
Have a good one.

Re: another rider, 2,815 miles to go.
That's great,
Oh, add another 20 miles for this morning for me. Thanks.
2835.5 - 20 = 2815.5 miles to go.

There are two kinds - one fastens to the axle and sticks up, the other fastens to a cross member and folds out horiontal, this kind is solid plastic with reflectors on it. This makes the bike appear wider. The first kind also comes in sectional models so you don't have to use the full length (if you want to reduce wind drag).

Re: Will be joining you
Welcome aboard Theodoric
I have a Giant Kronos it is over 20 years old, but it was a good bike in its time. It is in the shop now being tuned up. I haven't ridden it in 8 years so I told them to go over everything.
You might also want to look at a new seat - they have some new designs that improve comfort.
Get an odometer, and then you can track progress on any goals you set yourself.
I have two Giants (the mountain bike in the picture is a Sedona and the other is an Innova) plus a Raleigh Grand Prix 10-speed that is 30+ years old.
Enjoy.

Re: Stationary Bikes
While on vacation last week I rode 4.5 miles on the stationary.
Hopefully my neighbor and I will get the real bikes out in the next week or so and give you some more miles.
Mine will still be piddly compared to most, but every little bit helps, right?
Take Care

2811.0 miles to go.
Hi purpledawn, thanks.
While on vacation last week I rode 4.5 miles on the stationary.

Right on!
2815.5 - 4.5 = 2811.0 miles to go.

Small correction: 2811 miles to go.
RAZD writes:
2815.5 - 4 = 2811.5 miles to go.
It's only half a mile, but she did say she rode 4.5 miles.
So it's actually only 2811 miles to go.

First miles
Well I got my bike back from the shop today. Unfortunately, it was sans the new seat I ordered. I guess they are expecting the seat in later today, so I will pick it up next week.
I decided to give it a quick spin around the block. Well the block is 5.5 miles through the rolling hills of the Wisconsin lake country. I survived. Butt is a little sore, so I am looking forward to that new seat.
Put me down for 5.5 miles. Here is a pic of the antique. If memory serves me right I bought it in 1989 or 1990.
ABE
I am planning on riding it tomorrow morning to the elementary school I volunteer at. It is 5 miles each way. Could be fun. Could be a challenge.

2811.0 - 5.5 = 2805.5 miles to go.
Well done, Theodoric,

Padded cycling shorts help too.

Keep us posted. I've added a loop through a park on the way home that adds a couple of miles to my ride.
Then I have the option of going a little passed home on the trail ... maybe next week.
Enjoy.

Re: First miles
Awesome, Theodoric!
I find that, like RAZD said, padded shorts are a must. Even with the shorts, my butt and inner thighs need some conditioning bruising for the first few rides. But then the "calluses" build up and you're good to go, at least until mileage increases.
But those first rides: YOWCH!
Nice bike, BTW. Enjoy your vacation from the combustion engine.
Have a good one.
