It's about 3,400 miles from Providence RI to San Diego CA
Google Maps Beta Bike Route I've set myself a challenge to ride 1000 miles this summer, and have already passed the first 100, working on the second. Thought of making a challenge, and then thought a team challenge would be better. The idea is that we add up our miles to see how long it takes us, figuratively speaking, to move our hypothetical rider from Providence to San Diego. 3,400 - 100 = 3, 300 to go. Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand

Good start.
My trip odometer is at 115.6 now since I began, so that's another 15.6 miles. It's ~9.5 miles to work and back, but I can't do it every day (have days when I need a car). So if I get 4 days a week it's 38 miles a week. This is on my mountain bike converted to commuter bike (with panier racks so I can use it shopping). My overall odometer reading is 7,916 miles so I might break 9,000 by year end. I need to get my road bike fixed up (it's originally a cross bike, so heavy frame, but with 700 mm rims I can put on skinny tires for minimum drag), and then I can use that on weekends. There's a trail a block away (old railroad) that I take to work and it has a total length of 19 miles. Enjoy. 3256.5 - 15.6 = 3240.9 miles Edited by RAZD, : smiles we are limited in our ability to understand

Don't see why not, the exercise is the same, and they do have odometers to track the miles.
This trip is a fantasy ride as well (and the flat roads here would not compare with riding through the rockies). Welcome aboard. Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand

So I'll put you down for 100 for last week.

Hi Huntard,
Hope your riding was enjoyable in spite of the conditions. My odometer is now at 175.1 (17.5% of goal) so this means I've added (175.1-115.6) = 59.4 miles this week and we have (3,140-59) = 3,081 to go. It also means I am close to 8,000 miles on this odometer overall. The weather was too lousy for riding to work on two days, but I got out on a nice 25 mile ride today. Yep, that's 8,000 miles turned on my odometer today
Along this nice scenic little rail-trail section. I started at 7,801 and I now have 8,003 for a total of 202 miles so far on my 1,000 mile goal (20%). My trip odometer is at 202.5, so I've added 27.1 miles since message 9, so there is (3081-27) = 3,054 miles to go. Enjoy. Edited by RAZD, : /img not /qs we are limited in our ability to understand

Hi Apothecus, thanks.
Last week=60 miles. This week=90 miles. That's 150 miles off 3,054 = 2,904 miles to go.
Not much shoulder on that road, there fella. Careful ... Actually what you are looking at is a bike lane on a rail trail. I'm thinking of end-for-ending the trail this weekend (I live just off it and work just off it), it is 19 miles end to end iirc, so that would be 38 miles.
my wife's taken to wearing a neon-yellow jersey when riding on certain roads around here. I find flags work too, especially if they lean to the left.
my wife and I have a long ride coming up pretty soon (50-60 miles) A metric century? (100 km = 62.14 miles) My riding mate does a birthday ride in august, one mile for each year, and this year should be 62 miles (he's a young whipper-snapper). Enjoy we are limited in our ability to understand

That's great,
Oh, add another 20 miles for this morning for me. Thanks. 2835.5 - 20 = 2815.5 miles to go.
I'll check to see if my local bike shop has flags, and if they're sorted as to political affiliation. I assume left leaning flags are taxed at a higher rate... There are two kinds - one fastens to the axle and sticks up, the other fastens to a cross member and folds out horiontal, this kind is solid plastic with reflectors on it. This makes the bike appear wider. The first kind also comes in sectional models so you don't have to use the full length (if you want to reduce wind drag). Welcome aboard Theodoric
I have a Giant Kronos it is over 20 years old, but it was a good bike in its time. It is in the shop now being tuned up. I haven't ridden it in 8 years so I told them to go over everything. You might also want to look at a new seat - they have some new designs that improve comfort. Get an odometer, and then you can track progress on any goals you set yourself. I have two Giants (the mountain bike in the picture is a Sedona and the other is an Innova) plus a Raleigh Grand Prix 10-speed that is 30+ years old. Hi purpledawn, thanks.
While on vacation last week I rode 4.5 miles on the stationary. Mine will still be piddly compared to most, but every little bit helps, right? Right on! 2815.5 - 4.5 = 2811.0 miles to go. Edited by RAZD, : corrected we are limited in our ability to understand

Well done, Theodoric,
Well I got my bike back from the shop today. Unfortunately, it was sans the new seat I ordered. ... I survived. Butt is a little sore, so I am looking forward to that new seat. Padded cycling shorts help too.
I am planning on riding it tomorrow morning to the elementary school I volunteer at. It is 5 miles each way. Could be fun. Could be a challenge. Keep us posted. I've added a loop through a park on the way home that adds a couple of miles to my ride. Then I have the option of going a little passed home on the trail ... maybe next week. Thanks Apothecus,
Message 26 I find that, like RAZD said, padded shorts are a must. Even with the shorts, my butt and inner thighs need some conditioning bruising for the first few rides. But then the "calluses" build up and you're good to go, at least until mileage increases. Yeah the first few rides are tough on your ... ... but you get used to it.
Duathlon Saturday. Good luck. Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand

Hi Huntard
I'll be cycling home in a few hours, so that's my weekly dose of cycling complete again. I'm thinking about cycling some more this weekend, I'll keep you all posted on how that turns out. My weekly total is down a little 8048 - 8003 = 45 miles since last report. This puts me at 24.8% of my personal goal and ... 2715 - 45 = 2670 miles to go. Don't expect much this weekend - going to visit the folks and (joy) look at furniture to buy for their new house. Maybe monday ... if I don't go kayaking again.
