It's Beer
I like Alexander Keiths.
If it's not available, then I'll take a Molson Canadian.
If I'm not in Canada, then I'll have a Bud... and wish I had a Canadian beer.
Never been to Europe, but I hear drinking that stuff can make you raise a pinky finger while sipping...
Seriously... I'll drink whatever's clever, I don't really find it a big deal. I've never had a beer that didn't taste like beer. Sure subtlety's exist, I just don't find them overly interesting. But the side effects are fun

I can only presume you either have no sense of taste to speak of, or have never had good beer.
I had a beer by the canal with lunch, and now I want to sit in the sun and have another but, sadly, I have to work.

I like to presume that I'm so incredibly awesome that things other people think are cool are just... mundane... to me

I heard it's worse then that. I heard it'll turn you into Rrhain.
Btw, I'll be in Canada next week. Curious, I heard things, like...is pot legal there? I'll be in Saint John, NB.

It's Wine
I've never had a beer that didn't taste like beer.
I have a similar problem but more extreme.
In school I drank copious amounts of beer. I never found it satisfying going down but certainly enjoyed the buzz ... the blurred vision ... the vertigo ... the falling down. I was young then, what can I say.
Problem is, being a poor student, the only thing I could afford was the standard cheap American beers. Horse piss in a can.
I have tried. I really have. But beer is beer and the horse piss days of yore cannot be overcome.
Though I avoid the falling down part these days the buzz/somewhat fuzzy vision/slight vertigo trifecta is still pleasant and I have found the perfect potion to induce this while greatly enjoying the full sensory stimulation of consumption.
I most enjoy a good quality Cabernet. The differing subtle mixes of charcoals, woods, fruit, spice among the vintages are the keys to nirvana. Most French varietals have a smoother after-note than the Californian's but each elicits a full range of the most pleasant sensations going down. You can keep the Pinot Noir ... and the Merlot ... and for god sake keep the beer out of the neighborhood.

Good question, but I can't answer. I'm not following that scene too close. No problems with it... I just don't really care too much.
-I don't know if pot-laws vary from province to province, I think they do
-In Ontario (where I am), it's currently really weird. I believe that selling (purchasing?) and smoking it is illegal. However there's something strange like possession of a certain small amount is no longer illegal.
I can say that if you smoke pot in front of a cop you're still likely to get arrested.
I can also say that most cops (as far as I can tell) have better things to deal with and don't really care.
I do know that one of the radio shows I listen to (Edge 102.1... the main alternative rock station for Toronto), has it's morning-talk-show-hosts talk about smoking weed all the time. How much they like it and that they smoked "last night" and all this...
All in all, I'm not much help for your question. But I'm pretty sure the general rules apply... not hard to buy, but can't be purchased legally, and cops don't really care (because they likely smoke too...), but they'll bust you anyway if they see you because they have to.

Re: It's Beer
For domestic (Canadian) beers I usually drink Carling or Sleemans Ale.
I'm a big fan of the new(ish) Rickard's White and I generally love Hefe-weizen beers. Franziskaner Dunkel Hefe-weizen is my favourite. I find the dark (dunkel) weizen beers much smoother than the light (klar) brews. Erdinger Dunkel Weiss is a great beer as well.

My favorites are:
Pyramid Snow Cap Ale
Paulaner Hefewizen
Avery IPA
McEwan Oatmeal Stout
Anchor Porter
....and many more, just real hard to get in the tasteless hinterlands of West Texas.
Spaten Oktoberfest and Red Hook are OK, the specialty brews from Sierra Nevada and Saint Arnold are even better.
Carlsberg Elephant beer is interesting on occasion.
As for the Trappist brewery, well considering the reviews, I need to check them out.
Not rich enough to drink lambics or so poor I have to resort to Budweiser or Coors, (yecch!).
If I absolutely can't get anything better, have been known to resort to Guinness or Dos Equis Amber.
Now as for you Australians - what happened to Tooth's Sheaf Stout? I would gladly trade you ten cases for Ken Ham and Rupert Murdoch. In fact I would give you ten cases of Pyramid Snow Cap if you would take them back.

I split a bottle of mead with my friend as a teenager, it gave me the mother of all hangovers. Must have come from Grendal's distillery.
No wonder the vikings were so pissed off.

Sometimes how good it is depends on the circumstances
Right now the local brew I prefer is Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon.
When I was in Canada a few years ago we were drinking something with Grasshopper in the name and also something with Hogshead and cream in the name, both seemed good at the time.
When I was in Bolivia every town we went through had a sign on the outskirts that had the name of the town, but in much bigger letters it said Pacea: Es Cerveza. Pacea Tropical Extra was a pilsener. After a day hiking up and down jungle streams in the mountains with a heavy camera and insect net looking for dragonflies, it tasted great! Of course it was the only beer available, LOL. One day when we were way up in the mountains, above the rainforest, we came upon a Pacea tanker truck in the middle of the stream sucking up the water. A little further upstream there was a herd of cattle in the stream.

By far, the most beer that I drink is Bud Light.
Bud Light is like sex in a canoe...
Its fucking near water!
But I don't usually drink beer because I'm enjoying a dilicious beverage... I'm gettin' drunk!
As far as tasting good goes, I like:
IPA's or anything with a shitload of hops
Dark Ales
Any ol' Lager is fine for me
If fact, I've liked almost every single beer I've ever had except for wheat beers. I just don't like that wheat flavor.
I really like Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, Stella Artois, New Castle.
Fat Tire might be my favorite.
Oh, and barley wine...

Re: It's Beer
Hello jallen version 04! I'm glad the jallen series finally got around to making an acceptable model.
No offense intended, sometime my awesomeness can come across as a series of stupid jokes.
Welcome to EvC, have a look around, there's lots to see and do around here. Well, lots to see anyway. "Posting" is pretty much the only thing to do...
News on Rickard's White:
-it is only brewed in Montreal (I think... somewhere in Quebec, anyway)
-it is now also canned in Toronto, but still only brewed in Montreal
Other news on Molson's:
-in a very respectable (and honest) move, Molson's has taken it's "I am Canadian" slogan extremely seriously and has undergone multi-million dollar upgrades to it's brewing process to ensure that all aspects and ingredients (as much as possible, anyway) are from Canadian suppliers.
(Although it doesn't affect the final product much, some Canadian ingredients must go through a different refining process than other non-Canadian ingredients in order to get the same result... Molson has invested much money to alter their process in order to accomodate these Canadian ingredients only to stay true to their "I am Canadian" slogan).

Re: It's Beer
The jallen04 is my system ID at work. Since I'm easily confused I generally adopt it for most of my on-line id's.
I've been told the jallen05 model is is going to be less easily confused. That being said you may not recognize the jallen05 model because the upgrades won't require it to be known as jallen05 everywhere it goes. Come to think of it since my son's name is Joshua there is a jallen05 and he doesn't go by jallen05 to my knowledge so the upgrades have obviously worked.

My Favorites
If I'm out at a pub/bar its almost always Guiness on tap. Other than that I like Richards Red/White, Keith's India Pale Ale, Hacker-Pschorr, Dos Equis XX, Heineken and a few others. (Trying to keep my list short so it doesn't look like I have a problem )

BEEEEEEEEEERRRRR!!!!
Yes! Beer! Best drink known to man (although, wine isn't too bad either, or a good whisky)
Anyway:
Best pilsner on the planet:
Brand (From Limburg, bitches)
Other great pilsners:
Alfa
Gulpener
Also both from Limburg. The Alfa brewery uses an officially recognized underground spring to draw it's water from. This water is so pure, that without processing, it is utilized directly in the brewing process.
All these beers are produces within 60 Km of where I live. Yes, my province rules!
Warsteiner
From Germany
Great beers that are not pilsners:
Every other beer from Brand, Alfa and Gulpener. I can personally recommend the UP from Brand, the "Bokbier" from alfa, and the "bokbier" from Gulpener.
Erdinger whitebeer
From Germany
Jupiler pale lager
From Belgium
And that's about all i can think of right now.
