...but I really don't care about soccer.
And I don't know anything about the existing good players/countries or whatever. But I still want to jump on the bandwagon and have a team to go for. I would like to select it semi-randomly. I will take all the team as they are ranked right now.I will take the number of teams that are allowed to play in the world cup as a total and select the team that is ranked 18% of the way down. They will be my team, and I will cheer! ...looking up list...
FIFA Rankings Number of teams allowed to play in world cup...32? I could be wrong, but this is what I get from a quick Google search. So 18% of 32 is...5.76 So I cheer for the 6th ranked team which is....GERMANY!!! Woot! Go Tanks!! Germany will destroy all of your other weaker teams! They will have sex with your mothers and such! Germany will put the ball through the rectangle more times than your team! Germany will beat on you until your ass is as red as the cards given out for your weak diving!

Hi, Straggler.
Go, Greenland! Oh, wait... Greenland can't play soccer in Africa because they can't grow grass at home. That makes perfect sense. Oh well, so much for that dream. -Bluejay (a.k.a. Mantis, Thylacosmilus) Darwin loves you.

Are you drunk? Or have all those "cream sodas" gone to your head?
That makes perfect sense. If you say so.....

A successful World Cup for the US would be to beat England, make it out of pool play, and win their first match in the elimination rounds. Its only matter of time before the US becomes one of the powerhouses, but that time is not now. It had better not be........ Roll on Saturday. I have an all day pub session planned with mates from all over London and beyond. INGERLAAAND INGERRRRLLLLAAND INGGGEEERRRLLLAAAND Etc.

If you want a team to support as a disinterested neutral, take the Netherlands. They're one of the best teams in the world to never have won a World Cup, so you can combine the plucky underdog with the possibility of actually advancing to the later stages.
That, or cheer on New Zealand, just out of respect for them being willing to fly all the way to South Africa just to lose three games. Edited by caffeine, : No reason given.

I cannot do that, a fan's heart is in his loyalty! I've been with Germany since the beginning!! (The beginning of this World Cup?...) Go Germans!Make your plays so over-head heavy as to incorporate every possible situation that no one can ever make sense of them for any single specific use! And run faster than the other guys!

It sounds suspiciously like gridiron talk to me. Not only are you supporting Germany you are doing so "in American". This is the ultimate of footballing (that is real football) blasphemies

Heh... actually, that part had no sports-related intentions at all. It's more a rip on how Germans generally do their designs (electrical, architectural, mechanical...). I work in industrial automation. Stereotypical German design is something I deal with every now and then. Generally fascinating and incredibly modular. But also generally over-designed and comes with a steep learning curve.

Surprised the Yanks actually tied with England. Not at all surprised the Krauts bested the Aussies.... But 4-0???

quote: I take back all my earlier optimism. Without a vast improvement in performance, there is no possibility of England winning the World Cup. If we'd been playing like that against a team that was any good, we'd have been hammered. It's not been thrilling so far - Germany have been the only team to impress, but we're still to see Spain, Brazil or Holland. I'm gonna catch the first half of Holland-Denmark on my lunch today - I've read many people tipping Denmakr to be the darkhorses of the tournament, so looking forward to this.

For some reason my first attempt to reply your message wasn't sent.(?)
I take back all my earlier optimism. Without a vast improvement in performance, there is no possibility of England winning the World Cup. If we'd been playing like that against a team that was any good, we'd have been hammered. Don't get too downhearted. The result and performance was par for the course for an opening game for England. We nearly always start with a draw. And in the last World Cup, Italy played poorly and drew 1-1 with USA, but then went on to gradually improve and win the cup! I don't believe in omens, but we can still be positive! Hopefully Barry will be fit for the next game which means we can put out a more ambitious attacking formation. I'd like to see Joe Cole play on the left and Gerrard further forward, just behind Rooney. That ought to give us a lot more creativity and movement.

quote: Par for the course is not what I was hoping for - this would mean a quarter-final exit on penalties.
quote: He's been back in training, so we can be hopeful. I don't think we'll have too much trouble with Algeria or Slovenia regardless - they didn't exactly impress yesterday. I'll just be happy to not see Shaun Wright-Phillips on the pitch.
