I'd like to perform an experiment with all of you. I mentioned this in Identifying False Religions thread with Dr. Sing, but I'd like to open it up to the rest of the board.
The setup is simple: I have a predetermined rule in my head for sequences of numbers. Your task is to try to determine what that rule is.
Ask me any sequence of three numbers, and I'll tell you if the sequence obeys the rule or not. If you think you've guessed the rule, send me a PM, and I'll tell you if you've got it. Percy knows the actual rule, so there's no way I can change it after the fact.
I'll start it out with three examples that follow the rule:
2-4-6
14-18-20
38-42-44
Hopefully at least a few people will participate.

You need to ask a sequence of numbers to see if it follows the rule. If you think you know the rule - PM Rahvin.
eg:
2-4-10

AZP has asked nearly every question I'd like to ask, except perhaps these.
6, 4, 2
6, 2, 4
3, 2, 1
1, 3, 2
5, 3, 1
3, 1, 5
-6, -4, -2
-2, -4, -6
-2, -6, -4
Although AZP has probed most of the possibilities, he is still assuming, based on a very small sample, that the numbers must be in ascending order and positive.
Another point to note is that so far we've all tried one or two digit numbers. If we suppose that we've found the rule, we should still have to do an infinite number of tests to find out if the rule included some clause such as "and all the numbers must be smaller than n" or "all the numbers must be within m of one another" or "unless one of the numbers is k".
The principal difference between this sort of game and science is, of course, that Rahvin will tell us when we've got it right, and then the game is definitely over. In real life, we just have to go on conducting tests until we feel satisfied that we've got it right.
Edited by Dr Adequate, : No reason given.

That's the obvious hypothesis, but that's not the actual rule, no.

Indeed true. But no one said we can only test one set. This is just my first sequence. Along with the results from this and all the others there will be more.
