Tying the world cup to the EvC topic
I never thought I'd be able to tie the world cup event to what we normally discuss here at EvC. Amazing how the world keeps proving me wrong...
Yahoo
quote:
JOHANNESBURG (AP)Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.
David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.
He said, ‘No, I want to watch soccer,’ police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. That is when the argument came about.
In that argument, they started assaulting him.
Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.
Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.
It appears they banged his head against the wall, Malefo said. They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead.
All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on $200 bail Tuesday, Malefo said. The other two are still being held in custody.
Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.
He was always a happy man, never violent, Makoeya’s nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. On Saturday, we saw him the last time at a funeral.
The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11. Although most the tickets for the 64-game tournament have been sold, many in South Africa are too poor to attend matches.
Somehow, some people have managed to mix the world cup together with religion and outcomes a dead body. Incredible...

Monstrous. Watching the TV on a Sunday is ok - but getting up to change it by hand?? He might as well be picking up sticks!

Tragically, there's more
According to this report, people have been killed in Somalia for the "un-Islamic" activity of watching the World Cup.

On a lighter note, it looks like the French are going out.

Au revoir
On a lighter note, it looks like the French are going out.
And thank buggery for that! If only Italy hadn't equalised against Paraguay we could be hoping to wish them both goodbye and have the promise of an interesting end to the tournament.
The French played terribly. I have a sneaking suspicion that Domenech is actually an English spy. Not many could take such raw talent and mould it into such an insipid and ineffectual team - you'd have to be trying.

Goal keepers are supposed to STOP the ball...
No - I am not surprised the cheating Yank gits tied with England. How dare they shoot so pathetically that it surprises our highly trained goalkeeper into submission on the basis of shock poorness.
For shame, England, for shame...
Now that I'm back in the states, it's time to talk shit, but first, lets watch that goal again.
and maybe one more time
Wow, how sad and pathetic. He looked like a little league baseball player playing second base for the first time.
Don't worry Straggler, I'm sure England will bounce back and make it to the top 16. But man was that shitty display of goal keeping awesome, I mean awesome for me.
Stay tune for more shit talking....

Re: Goal keepers are supposed to STOP the ball...
Why does everyone only keep showing us that goal? I've seen it on Czech TV about 6 billion times already. It isn't the only crap goal of the tournament so far!
Germany just lost to Serbia, which means Ghana could well win the group! Just watch England succeed in topping their group now - only to face Germany next round as a reward.

Just like to point out the small consolation that the USA are a goal down to Slovenia and looking pressured.

Actually the US is down by 2 goals! and Spain will be in the final 4 regardless of what happened with the Swiss.
