They haven't drawn much attention because they've been balls. Winning an easy group by playing not quite as bad as your opposition doesn't amount to 'starting well'. They won't face any serious opposition till the quarter finals though, so they have plenty of time to raise their game.
This is true as well. If they don't improve soon they'll get their asses handed to them.

Re: Go Dutch!
Hope that helped a bit.
Yes, thanks, that was interesting. Didn't need to hear how your navy once whooped us, though; we're feeling bad enough as it is.
Anything else you'd like to know?
Yes. How can England get into the final of either the World Cup or Euro Championship? This question is open to any of those nations who seem to manage this on a regular basis. (At least once every 20 years.)
Meanwhile:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
FIFA: "The chicken did not cross the road."

Re: Go Dutch!
I'm so happy not to live in England now. Just imagining the endless chorus of self-pitying lamentations about the disallowed goal, as if it mattered in the face of how totally outclassed we were, sends shivers down my spine.
Apart from Fabio Cappello, nobody is using that excuse. Strangely, it makes it easier to accept the defeat because we were outplayed, rather than by thinking we were hard done by.
I hate to say it, but there's so much we can learn from the Germans. There's so much they get right at every tournament. You can't qualify for at least the quarter finals at every World Cup, and reach 7 finals, without doing a lot of things right. We keep doing things our way and it never works. I really hope the FA doesn't consider the only option is to change the manager. We played poorly at the last World Cup too (where we bumbled into the quarter finals by playing a succession of poor teams), and didn't even qualify for the last Euros. There are fundamental problems with the way we approach the international game.

And we're through
Though the playing sucked again, it is 2-1 victory for The Netherlands.
Bizarre penalty in the last second of play, but meh.
Probably facing Brazil (or Chile) next. The first real test.

Re: Nail Biter
An old, grey, wizened JUC says: "Fuck."
A hungover Straggler says ditto.
A chastening experience. Those pesky Germans did it again.
After the game we got a ball out, went over to the park and did a replay of the game amongst ourselves. I am glad to say that I scored 3 and setup 2 with an eventual score of 11-9 to England captained by my good self.
If I can do that whilst barely spilling any beer at all as I run round the pitch beer-can in hand I fail to see why the professionals can't do similarly well.
I suppose to be fair our version of Germany had a girl in goal and an 11 year old kid up-front.
I have transferred my now relatively disinterested allegiance to Ghana.

You should have listened to your liver.
My liver is waving a white flag of surrender as I write.
It is probably just as well England have gone out. It may well have saved me from both alcohol induced hospitalisation and divorce.

To be honest, that's all I had done (heard about them). Although, I'd got the impression they were playing quite well. Apparently not, except for winning 4 consecutive games, which is something England have never done in the finals of any tournament since I started watching them in 1982.
Still, if Holland can go all the way without playing well, it gives me hope for England's future.

Hi, JUC.

They're playing well : it's just hideously boring .
As an illustration, against Japan, they controlled the ball through most of the first half, but the average position of the ball throughout that half was on the Dutch side of the field. Two-thirds of their passes were from one fullback to another. Apparently, the offense wasn't setting stuff up for them, and they couldn't risk Japan getting any touches, so they just piddled around back there.
The statistics in the preceding paragraph may have been made up by myself.
Edited by Bluejay, : No reason given.

Aha! Those cunning Germans. Not drinking 6 pints before the match and refusing to ingest or carry more beer whilst actually playing.
Now why didn't the England team think of that?
These fancy foreign coaching methods will never catch-on here.
