Smilies List Now in the Database
I've just released code that moves the smilies list into the database. The change should be transparent. Please let me know if you encounter any problems.

This is fixed. Thanks for the bug report, and also to RAZD about the effect on peek.

Maintaining the proper setting of "Disable Smilies" is on the list.

Re: Test possible signature bug
Hi RAZD!
Yes, you're right, there was a software glitch that lasted about a week, it was fixed a few days ago. The glitch caused signatures that used dBCodes to include unintended spaces in messages, but it wouldn't affect the stored signature of the profile unless you actually edited it during that period.
Edited by Admin, : Add sig.

Yep, it's on the list. This won't be coming soon. I know it sounds simple, but what I want to implement is a problem reporting system that includes tracking, reporting, assignments, closing or voiding, etc.
For now we have to make do with the Report discussion problems here: No.2 thread.

The short answer is yes.
The long answer is that the rating system as currently implemented is widely viewed as deeply flawed and will be modified. An improved version of the current approach will remain an option for board administrators, but the version I'll eventually be implementing and that will be used for this board will be an automated form of our Post-of-the-Month system. Unfortunately I cannot provide a schedule at this time.

Topic Message Indices are Back
The message index feature for threads is back. You can click on the mood icon in threads and messages and get an index of all the messages in the thread. Messages are listed in order down the left hand side. In the far right column are listed all the replies for that message along with an indication of whether the replies have been responded to. A red dot indicates no response yet, an orange dot indicates that the author of the message acknowledges the reply but does not plan to respond, and a green dot indicates a response was posted.
Normally the dots are small, but they are much larger when you yourself are the author of the message. If you click on a red dot it will become orange to indicate you wish to acknowledge the reply. If you click on an orange dot it will become red to indicate you no longer wish to acknowledge the reply. You can't click on a green dot because it indicates you've already responded, and you can't delete a message.
I'm hoping to discover what a "Whoop!" from a thousand miles away sounds like. I'll be at my window listening. Or will you be playing it cool?
Can the activity bar be far behind?

Re: Topic Message Indices are Back
Yeah, I was wondering if anyone would use it the way you're trying to use it.
The "click for details" means to click on the icon. In other words, if you hover over the suspended icon you get a hoverbox of info that disappears as soon as you're no longer hovering over the icon, while if you click on the icon you get a persistent box which might have links in it.
I could change the instructions to say "click on icon for more info."
Another approach might be to bring up a hoverbox whose upper right corner is positioned on top of the suspended icon, then if the hoverbox has links in it the user could move the mouse cursor to them without the hoverbox disappearing. The problem with a non-persistent box is that a little sloppy mouse motion outside the box will cause it to disappear, but this can be fixed with a turn-off delay, but turn-off delays can be annoying.
Anyone have a preference or other ideas?

Re: Changing avatar problem
All the major browsers have gradually over time upgraded their security regarding uploads from users' computers, and I've made accommodative changes as I've noticed issues. I'll take a look.

You're right, FF doesn't raise a vertical scroll bar if the window's too small, or a horizontal scrollbar either if it's too narrow. Don't know why this strange behavior, I'll see what I can figure out. Or you could switch to Chrome where it works.
You can still scroll using PageUp, PageDown, the arrow keys and the space bar.
What is it about the popup window that you don't like?

Re: C & P
This is a longstanding problem in a couple different browsers, FF for one. The two flavors, normal and peek, are represented in consecutive div's. They toggle with one being visible and the other hidden. If you select a little below the top or bottom you could select the hidden text, too.
I think I can use Javascript to add/remove the div's instead of using visible/hide, which should fix the problem. This is relatively simple, but I have a rather long list of small items on my todo list right now. It could take a few weeks.
About the pop-up, I need to know more than you don't like it, plus there's another issue concerning pop-ups and tabs. Some browsers, IE I think, bring it up in a tab no matter what you do. Others provide varying degrees of user control over how pop-ups are handled. But I'll play with it some more and see how how much control I can provide to the user over how they're handled.

As a writer of software, what other end do you have in mind except gratifying the wishes of your users?
I'm trying to understand if this is a personal preference that might vary from person to person, or if there's some more objective reason.
I have Firefox set up so that if I click on anything it will open in a new tab, rather than in a new window. This is how I like it to be. You, along with people who wish me to pay money to see naked women or to play online poker, have managed to circumvent this clearly stated preference. I resent this.
We've been calling it a pop-up, but it's not. Pop-ups are when a window opens without any user action, and that's what pop-up blockers are for. I haven't done any intervention of pop-up blockers. The announcement window is simply a new window. As I said, I'll take a look and see what I can do to make it more responsive to user preference settings.

Re: Can you drop the fucking flashing announcements?
Only announcement links that have never been clicked blink. The only exception is if the announcement is edited, which sets it blinking again. Also, announcement links don't blink for anyone who isn't logged in.
Is there interest among the membership for a preference that causes announcement links to never blink?

Gee, I didn't think anyone would complain!
I think I see a hole in my testing strategy. On my test board the most likely person a recent message is from is me, so of course I never saw a problem.
This is fixed, thank you very much for reporting it.
