Conservatives used to be what we would call fiscal conservatives.
Then Nixon went after the religious "conservatives" from the south, and brought them into the Republican party. Prior that they were almost all democrats.
Now they are taking over the Republican party, and pretending that they are the real, and the only, conservatives.
Some of them would just as soon see a theocracy as long as their faction was the one in charge.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: Meaning Of Conservative

Since 1980, the conservatives have been working to destroy the status quo.
How so?
The real conservatives, ala Barry Goldwater, are for small government, military strength, and fiscal responsibility.
The recent batch of conservatives, the social conservatives, are entirely different. They are largely evolved from southern Democrats, and seem to want to impose their religious views on everyone else by political means. They are certainly not for small government and fiscal responsibility.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

A lot of people who call themselves "conservative" would be better called "reactionary".
A lot of people who call themselves "conservative" would be better called "libertarian;" they want small government, and want to be left alone. The last thing they want is the government snooping, particularly in bedrooms.
The modern religious right wants big government as long as it furthers their particular religious beliefs. Making laws to enforce their particular dogma is a goal for these folks, and the government snooping in bedrooms is just fine with them. Bah!

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: Freedom to imbibe
I wouldn't try. I like upstate Bully Hill and Johnson Estate semi dry. The wine, a Rolling Rock Pale beer a day and a shot of gin or whiskey on occasion help to keep my aged veins clean and gladden the heart, as King David suggested in Psalms 104.
Would that your colleagues felt the same way.
Many of them feel that if they are called to rub blue mud in their navals on alternate Thursdays, then the rest of us should do so as well. And too many of them want to use the government to enforce their beliefs.
Forgive him, Caesar — he is a barbarian and considers that the customs of his tribe are the laws of nature.
