Re: Am I really that stupid, or...
I started on the Internet in 1974 (it was called the Arpanet at the time). For literally decades everyone I conversed with was involved in one aspect or another of the computer industry or was at an institution of higher learning. Beginning around 1995 this began to change, and it began to change in earnest around 2000 or so. Now you can't even count on conversing with someone sane, let alone reasonable and rational. That's reality now.
Of course, here at EvC Forum we aim for higher quality discussion than normally occurs on the Internet. I'll take a look later tonight and see if I can think of anything that might help.

Re: Am I really that stupid, or...
Dkroemer seems to be making correct and insightful comments and observations with no idea how to tie them together into an argument for his position about the soul. I can't make any sense of it either. Ferreting out how his arguments connect to his premise seems like an interesting challenge for those who have the time and patience.

Re: Embedded video
The ability to embed HTML in messages will be coming back very soon, sometime Saturday at the latest. I'm writing software now that will detect and filter dangerous HTML tags like <script> and attributes like onMouseOver. Members will then once again be able to embed YouTube videos in messages.

Hi Archaeologist,
The moderators have realistic expectations about conformance to the Forum Guidelines. Our view is that as long as someone is following most of the guidelines most of the time then that's pretty good.
In the view of the moderator team the member exhibiting the worst conformance to the Forum Guidelines over the past few weeks has been yourself. These are the Forum Guidelines you seem to be having the most problems with:
  1. Follow all moderator requests.
  2. Please stay on topic for a thread. Open a new thread for new topics.
  3. Points should be supported with evidence and/or reasoned argumentation. Address rebuttals through the introduction of additional evidence or by enlarging upon the argument. Do not repeat previous points without further elaboration. Avoid bare assertions.
  4. Bare links with no supporting discussion should be avoided. Make the argument in your own words and use links as supporting references.
  5. Always treat other members with respect. Argue the position, not the person. Avoid abusive, harassing and invasive behavior. Avoid needling, hectoring and goading tactics.
Your approach to discussion could be summarized as blustery, accusatory and complaining, combined with avoidance of central issues.
You're still a relatively new member learning how EvC Forum works and are not in any danger of permanent suspension at the present time, but unless you begin demonstrating improved adherence to the Forum Guidelines and making your general approach to discussion more constructive you will over time draw increasing amounts of attention from moderators.

Hi Archaeologist,
This thread is for constructively bringing to the attention of moderators any problems with discussion or moderation that you might be having, but for the most is not for lengthy discussions.
If there is a specific problem that you would like to bring to the attention of moderators then please briefly describe the problem and post a link.

Discussion About Definitions of Fag
I haven't been following what led up to this. While I disapprove of baiting (fag or otherwise), I also object to a "more sensitive than thou" attitude. Plus humor can be incredibly context dependent once you leave the mainstream stuff you see on TV, and even there you can see comedians walking the fine line - I've seen Kathy Griffin tell plenty of jokes at gays expense, just ask Ryan Seacrest, who apparently has a sense of humor since Griffin's been on his radio program.
Just for the record, gays are fine by me. Of course, I don't want my daughter marrying one...
Anyway, whatever the facts of the matter, could I ask that everyone start with the assumption that there were no ill intentions involved, and could you guys take this discussion to a Coffee House thread? Thanks!
