yes me too. I hope you find something. The point I am trying to make is that before you attribute a quote from someone you should know the original source. There are a lot of misattributed quotes on the internet and until I see the original source I am going to assume it is not Lee. Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

do what you will. almost no one on here links thier quotes to the original source, so I guess you do not believe any of them. I will assume it is lee, as you have failed to disprove it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "I'll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years." President Lyndon B. Johnson on the Civil Rights Act of 1964

When there is a quote that I am not sure about, I do a google search for that quote. In the case of the quote you posted, the google search does not turn up anything decisive.do what you will. almost no one on here links thier quotes to the original source, so I guess you do not believe any of them. If I were posting that quote, instead of using "Robert E Lee" as the source, I would have written "usually attributed to Robert E. Lee."

As you can see, AE can make up quotes all day. Mostly they can be found at racist blogger sites; he never knows any published or cited source for them.
But they usually feature Democrats or liberals supposedly saying things that would shock the liberal conscience. That's good enough for him. And he just LOVES the opportunity to type "nigger"...then he can be called out for it and do his rant on how the REAL racists are those who call him out. AE is internally consistent: it's only when he leaks into the real world that the cracks show. Dost thou prate, rogue? -Cassio Real things always push back.-William James

I will assume it is lee, as you have failed to disprove it. "This war is about slavery" --- Robert E. Lee Your turn to prove a negative.
"I'll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years." President Lyndon B. Johnson on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "I will commit genocide to preserve the supremacy of the Aryan Race" --- Sarah Palin. Whaddya mean "source"? It's on the internets. Well, it is now.

That's precisely the problem. It is very easy to make up quotes, and to get them all over the internet. As you can see, AE can make up quotes all day. For a real bumper crop of made-up quotes, you have to turn to conservative/creationist sites' listings of Thomas Jefferson quotes.
They write new ones faster than the old ones can be debunked. I think there's a little old Tea Party lady in Virginia who gets up every day, feeds her cats, and then sits down to write her TJ quote of the day. The Lyndon Johnson chestnut that AE offered is a beaut. It was first reported in Newsmax journalist Robert Kessler's book, Inside the White House, where it was described as a comment made by LBJ to two governors aboard Air Force One. That was 30-odd years before the book was written, so of course LBJ cannot defend himself: rule one of quote factories--Use dead people. He also reported for Newsmax on then-Sen. Obama sitting silently while Rev. Wright denounced white arrogance. From wiki:
quote: Case closed? No, not at Newsmax: Also from wiki:
quote: But Kessler is a major journalistic figure, right? He wouldn't go along with such shabby practices. More from wiki:
quote: Formula: Make it up, insist it could somehow be true when evidence shows it isn't, then try to change the historical record. Amusingly, I find the purported quote usually ascribed to LBJ is sometimes attributed to FDR. But, again, for truly awesome right-wing lie factory productivity, nobody beats the Jefferson lady. I am just responding to your spurious quotes and unevidenced assertions. Like I always do.

Well there are a couple of reasons I question your quotes. You are notorious for spurious quotes. Also, I research all the quotes that are advocating a political viewpoint that are not sourced. Amazingly, they all have some basis in reality, except for yours. Your Reagan quote is an actual quote, but you did misattribute it. It was not said by President Reagan, but rather by private citizen Ronald Reagan, before he was even Governor of California. It was a speech for the Goldwater campaign in 1964. A correct attribution would make it clear that it was not from Reagan while he was President. But I am sure you didn't know that at all. Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

We can't have a quotes thread without including the man who is by far the most quoted person in the English speaking world. We have all quoted or paraphrased him many times without necessarily realising it. Here's a selection:
quote: There are lots of examples of famous quotes that play on Shakespeare's originals. Two I can think of for the above are these: * "Brevity is the soul of lingerie" - Dorothy Parker ** "The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast." - Oscar Wilde

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so. Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge. |
