Re: Scary Implications
Phat writes:
First of all, how can some people "get rich" while others remain the same? How did 35 trillion turn into 70? Where did the extra money come from?
Some people do get rich, others stay the same, others get poorer. The very thing you quoted shows where the extra money came from, the new productivity of India, Brazil, China and other countries.
Phat writes:
Second, what are the implications for us here in the U.S.? Are our pensions safe? Is having twice as much money in the pool equivalent to the value of each unit being half as much? If it becomes harder and harder for our investments to make a profit, will the competition diminish our standard of living?
It means that competition has already increased. Having twice as much money simply means that there is twice as much money. In the past we mainly made money by exploiting others. There will be fewer and fewer people or things to exploit.
Phat writes:
I fear that what this means is that the way of life as we knew it is gone...forever. America is now becoming just another country that has to work harder and harder to even remain at the same standard of living that once came easy to us. That scares me...because I am getting old.
Except for the very short Aberration period, that has always been true.

Re: Aberration Period
The Aberration was that period after WWII when the productivity of almost ever developed nation except the US had been destroyed.
For a period of almost fifty years the US had a significant advantage; even the very materials to rebuild the infrastructure of Japan, Korea and western Europe came from the US. In addition, the political regimes in the Soviet Union and its satellites and in China held those peoples back.
The one real industrial power in the world was the US and no other nation really competed.
But that had not always been the case. Japan, Germany, Italy, France and in particular the British Empire had been equal competitors before WWII, and in many ways maybe even more advanced then the US.
The Aberration was a result of the ramped up capacity of the US as well as the destruction of the economic and industrial capabilities of much of the other industrial nations.
A big problem for the US though is that kids were taught that the Aberration was the norm, that the US was the Top Dog and so they had an inviolable right to their prosperity without competition.

Re: The American Mindset
You don't understand. Inflation in the price of gold is real money while inflation in the price of a house is not.

Re: The American Mindset
I'm sorry Buz but it that is all just nonsense.
Do you even have a clue what I said?
Let me try again.
How is inflation of a house price different than inflation in the price of an ounce of gold?

safe investments
Stop and think Phat.
The US decided about thirty years ago that safe investments were NOT what the US needed. The voters supported getting rid of safe investments.
Safe Investments were found in three basic areas, Regulated Utilities and Transportation where a limited monopoly was granted but the business was heavily regulated, and in Government Bonds.
The public decided that we should deregulate the first two.
We made the decision that those pension managers should adopt risk as opposed to safety.
Sorry Charlie but you tossed the secure pension away thirty years ago.

Re: The American Mindset
Where in your quote does it explain what the intrinsic value of gold is? We can see that it makes that claim, but where is the supporting evidence or explanation?

Re: The Intrinsic value of gold as the best commodity for money
Phat writes:
In other words, because of its rarity, durability, malleability, and uniformity, gold has traditionally been the best substance for money. Money cant simply be created out of thin air. Why do you think that the central banks still own lots of gold even to this very day? What value does it have for them?
It is just ONE of many commodities, just as your link says. It is another commodity just like oil or wheat or lumber or pork bellies. The only difference is that because it is pretty dense and inert, it can be stored in a small area while other commodities can be most easily stored as paper certificates.
But again, your link simply makes assertions. It does NOT explain why gold has some unique intrinsic value.
One other thing?
Have you noticed that all the folk talking about how gold has some intrinsic value are also trying to sell YOU their gold for YOUR paper money?

Re: The Intrinsic value of gold as the best commodity for money
Phat writes:
I realize that there are many hucksters who attempt to sell gold.
I will say, however, that it is advantageous for large sums of money to be represented by a rare and precious metal.
Why? How? Which has more value, a dollars worth of gold or a dollars worth of lead?
Phat writes:
Why do nations still have gold reserves? Why do many wealthy families own large amounts of gold? Gold has value because powerful entities need it to have value. Money cannot simply be an electronic blip that denotes human value, since there would be no concentration of rarity and exclusiveness with such a system.
I explained that, gold is dense and so can be stored in small areas. But it is just ONE commodity that people or nations hold.
Money is nothing but an accounting system. It is nothing but a notation period.

That still does not address the question Phat.
Which has more value, a dollars worth of gold or a dollars worth of lead?

Re: Valueless $$
Buz writes:
Biblically/prophetically, this is on tract, corroborating other end time prophecies. Why? Because it is prophesied in the book of Revelation, chapter 13 that all nations, tribes and tongues will, in the apocalyptic end times be required to buy or sell via marks and numbers implanted in the right hand or forehead.
Buzz, if you ever get up the nerve to start a thread on your Biblical Prophecy nonsense we can address it, but I imagine that is about as likely as any Biblical Prophecy coming true in the first place.
That one in particular is one of your sillier examples.
But I imagine that Phat started this thread because he was listening to Christian Radio yet again. It seems that the folk selling vitamins and health foods and gold and prayer hankies know their demographics and so sell where they know the suckers are lined up.

No problem Buz, I proposed one where you can try to support your position. Hoope to see you there.

Buz writes:
In the Reagan years, the debt increased because the Democrat Congress which spends money increased spending.
From 1981-1987 the Republicans held the Senate. Plus Reagan still had veto power.

Re: Reagan's Democratic Congress
LOL.
So once again you admit that you were simply wrong. If Republican also voted for the bills then it is NOT Democrats that did anything. In addition, Reagan still held veto power and did nothing.

Re: Ruff Explains Inflation Fundamentals
You're discounting liklihoods, assuming that Ruff and his constituents were naieve imbeciles lacking the good sense to act prudently.
No one is saying that Ruff is an imbecile. He is in the business of selling what he writes. Far from being an imbecile it looks like he has very astutely defined his potential market demographic.

Re: What Is Money?
Phat writes:
I was told that its silly to think of what the conspiracy theorists say about the dollar being at risk of being stripped of its role as a global reserve currency, but, also, others have told me that indeed this is true. This is all news to me.
Is there a possibility that life in the U.S. may get even worse than it is now?
HUH?
What value is added by being a Global Reserve Currency and do you even know what that means?
