Re: Phats 2 cents
But I wish that you would remember that we do also have many young members. Yes, curse words are just words however when the words you use inhibit communication are they the best choice for "telling it like it is"?

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Re: Phats 2 cents
They will only do so if the person reading the post allows those particular words to get in the way of the message. If I were to replace "fuck" with "fudge", none of you would say a damn thing. What is the difference? There isn't one, other than fuck is more effective.
The difference is that one term serves as a means of stopping communication as opposed to continuing discussion.
I care, why? Why should I censor myself for some kid on the internet? That same young person could just as easily head over to 4CHAN and see much worse than my curse words...... If the time were to come where Percy no longer allowed "naughty language" on EvC, I would be glad to censor my language in order to follow board rules. Until that time comes, I couldn't give a shit less. If the rest of you care so much, either don't use the language yourself, or petition Percy to ban anyone who swears.
Yes, we perceive that you do not care. And that is fine if your goal is to be ignored. In addition, the "Billy did it too!" defense did not work on the playground at kindergarten and is unlikely to have much more success here.
I fully understand that effective swearing is an art, and one that does require practice and experience, and if that is your purpose, well then perhaps this is a good a place for you to learn the art as any other. You might want to pay attention to those who seem to have mastered the art; perhaps you may learn from them.
At your current level of mastery though it seems far more like the typical five year old looking for attention rather than the surgical use of expletives.

Thank you Buz
That has got to be one of the funniest posts I have read in years.
Buz writes:
Fine and dandy for you, Hooah, but everyone knows which member is intended by the abbreviated rendition.
The CIA could not have said it better.
Buz writes:
You've thereby become a little less ignorant of the English language yourself in that you now (if you've been reading) that the word "aire" was grammatically correct in my usage of it.
toujours gai, toujours gai
Buz writes:
The large majority of our EvC membership articulate their messages in a respectful manner indicative of having been brought up by parents and mentors who have taught them what is descent and proper in communicating to others, particularly in the public fora.
A masterpiece Buz, a masterpiece.

Buz, you outdo yourself.
Just when I think you've reached the pinnacle you go and prove me wrong.
Buz writes:
Perhaps it offends nobody among your circle of friends and associates who consider it glorious in it's conjugations.
Genius.

It just keeps getting better.

This thread has been good for us all. I sincerely appreciate the constructive criticism of you all. I have become aware that there was some validity in Hooah's charges, but certainly not to the degree which he described it. I will work to improve on communication skills in the future. Perhaps some other members will do so as well so as to make the cite even better than it is.
Buz, you are a marvel.

Re: Profanity And Racism
But EvC is also a place where we do have young kids present and where swearing is not seen as the norm.
Particularly on the internet where anonymity is the norm, we cannot tell if the audience is old or young. When people post at a forum like EvC it is not a private conversation, not even a discussion among people of a known age group or maturity.
Does it not then make more sense to post as though you were in the presence of young children?

You can't really hurt anyone's feelings, you are not that significant, but we will judge you based on what you post. There is little else to base it on.
No one is censoring what you say or even limiting it.

People "tone it down in mixed company" when it carries serious repurcussions. For example : one would not curse in the presence of a senior vp of the company he or she works for because it may affect the work environment. It still seems as though you are placing members of this community in such a position. I don't see any of you as being important enough for anyone to curb their language. The only repercussion is lack of discourse because the opponent uses words you are uncomfortable with.
Another example would be why one wouldn't cuss around the senior members of their family. I would assume one would not do so because your parents would slap your mouth just because the words are labeled as bad. I use profanity around all of my family and have done so since i was 14 so maybe that's why I don't view it as actually being offensive language other than society saying it is offensive.
Fearful, weak people might do that.
Others tend to consider propriety and the feelings of others as well as what would be most likely to enhance communication.

It's because I am intelligent and experienced enough to have a vocabulary sufficient to express myself without using such terms.

However no one has suggested banning or even censoring; what has been said is that how a person expresses themselves can have an effect on whether or not others listen.
