Not sure if it is counter-intuitive per se, but Archimedes' Screw:
I don't why, but it sets off a false-positive on my bullshit meter. It all 'seems wrong'. Edited by Panda, : typo

On a similar vein: the phases of the moon not being caused by the Earth.
That summer and winter are not related to how close the earth is to the sun.

Your intuition/common sense tells you that you do not exist?
That I exist.

Well that's not what I said... Your intuition/common sense tells you that you do not exist?*nods*

Thank you for providing the eloquence I am currently lacking.
Even if it does end up qualifying in some sense, you are still a pretentious ass for posting it, because the mere fact of having to dig into some gay philosophical bullshit to get whatever old rotten meat might be there means it doesn't qualify for the detailed qualifiers.

We should burn the cannonball as a witch!! I believe the scientific explanation for this is that the cannonball weighs the same as a duck. My physics teacher filled a large tray with mercury and floated various chunks of metal in it.Even in front of your own eyes it still looks 'all wrong'.

Weight is not affected by velocity. Why not?You can't increase your weight by moving quickly (unless you approach the speed of light maybe?). Edited by Panda, : added question mark

If you let your imagination 'run riot', there seems to be too many possibilities. But knowing what kind of sensor that door used would help in figuring out what had happened. The sliding doors were on a tube train? The sliding doors were opened by a security guard inside? The sliding doors were locked because they led to a shop which closed after the previous people entered? The sliding doors were on a lift? etc...

'Logic problems' often rely on incorrect interpretation of words for them to work. But obviously such a device doesn't measure weight as such. If you hit a set of bathroom scales with a sledgehammer, does it just register the weight of the hammer?e.g. "What walks on 4 legs, then 2 then 3?" is intentionally misleading as '3 legs' includes a walking stick. I was thinking that the use of the word 'weight' was the 'trick'.Obviously, in reality, pressure mats are triggered by any type of downward force (including weight and momentum).

The Monty Hall Problem seems to cause people a lot of grief.
quote: Luckily, when I first heard of it, it was from a very clever friend who successfully explained it to me in 30 seconds. I did once see a forum thread that dragged on for over a year with people constantly arguing back and forth about what the correct answer was.

In the thread (mentioned previously) they went to far more effort than that (after trying your explanation and getting nowhere). The most intuitive explanation I can think of is this. They posted code (in various languages) so that people could see the actual results. They had graphs and Venn diagrams and...well, everything you could think of and more. But it is so counter-intuitive that some people never understand. It is annoying that I can't find that thread again. It was epic and epic fail simultaneously. Edited by Panda, : No reason given.

Succinctly put? Maybe. Simply put, the contestant will be wrong 2/3rds of the time, and the host will obligingly eliminate the other wrong choice.Simply put? Not so much. My favourite comment is:
If you switch, you halve your chance of winning a goat! *sadface* Edited by Panda, : No reason given.

The answer is here: Message 69.
It would be helpful if Dr. A could wag his finger at jar & myself, saying something like "Nice try, but Wrong."

I am not sure I agree with this (I've not given it too much thought), but I think I have accidentally swamped Dr. A's thread with messages about Monty Hall. Now, if in the first scenario he knows where the prize is, then you should change your choice when asked to. While in the second (seemingly identical) scenario he does not know where the prize is, then it doesn't matter if you change or not, you'll have the same odds of winning. If it's ok with you, I'd rather leave this as an unfinished discussion than continue to usurp this interesting thread.
