As you may know, I have a part time night job cleaning a veterinary clinic. I spend a couple hours cleaning and many more hours on the internet.
Anyhow, tonight we have 3 dogs and 1 cat here, all really nice critters - 1) A German Shepard cross - Came in with uncontrolled diabetes. Pretty skinny, but seems to be doing well now. 2) A Pug(?) - Blind. Has had one eye removed and (seems to me) to have cataracts and/or glaucoma in the other eye. 3) A Pomeranian which had all it's teeth pulled today. 4) A kitten that has some sort of neurological problem. A little sweetie, but wobbles around as if drunk. The doctor told me to be very careful to not get bit - Rabies is a possibility. An odd collection of ailments. Not the more common collection of spays, declaws, and "having something done tomorrow". Or sometime an empty house at night. Speaking of declawing, my 5 cats all have all their claws, except for big old Marvin who lost 1 toe to an infection (that's why he ended up here from the shelter - I adopted him directly out of the clinic). 3 of the 5 cats I adopted out of the clinic. 1 cat (kitten at the time) had been at the clinic and was in a temporary foster home. The 5th (Teddy "the weasle") came from the local shelter. A lot of locations are outlawing declawing cats. What I see, is that declawing is a pretty humane procedure, and gives a lot of cats homes where having claws could be a problem. By the way, the avatar cat of the moment (Tan, subject to change) is Squeak. She was the one in the temp foster home. 6 years and pushing 9 months later we've finally gotten confirmation of my speculation.
To repeat from message 12:
Dogs think "they care for me, they feed me, they shelter me - they must be gods." Cats think "they care for me, they feed me, they shelter me - I must be a god." I could offer up 1 "get out of jail free" card to someone who would tally up the "owners", affiliations, and canine/feline totals. BTW, currently 5 cats, in order of acquisition - Squeak(F) (aka "Grumpy"), Teddy(M) (aka "The Weasel"), Marvin(M) (aka "Big old Marv, the generic cat", and litter mates Punky(F) (aka "The Fluffy Pork Ball") and Munchkin(F) (aka "The Little Princess"). Teddy is a black and white "tuxedo" cat. While the rest of my cats are a bit on the plump side, Teddy is "the little skinny guy". And whenever there is something new for a cat to check out, get into, get on top of, or in general mess with, Teddy the Weasel the one to do it.
He's also probably my favorite of the bunch. Now, I leave you with:
Source Not Teddy, Teddy's not polydactyl, but the above cat might have some weasel in him. Moose

I've just looked at it a few more times, and it still gives me a bigger laugh than anything I recall (of course, my memory banks don't have real good recovery - I call it NAM, No Access Memory).

This is a not uncommon problem seem at the vet clinic I work at. Earlier this week we had a (male?) cat that was blocked up.
My cat Hiss (RIP, currently in the avatar) had a less severe variation of the problem, which I think was largely instigated by the cheap food I had been using. Cheap food has a way of not being so cheap in the long run. Hiss never totally blocked up, but did have blood showing up in her urine. Off the top of my head, the common problem is magnesium phosphate crystals, accompanied by a urine basic pH. I believe (but may be wrong), that urine pH should be a little on the acid side. I suspect Smudge is currently on the Hill's s/d variety diet, or something equivalent. s/d is available in dry or canned, and is for short term treatment use. The c/d variety (dry or canned) is for longer term use, although my impression is that c/d is generally not needed real long term. My impression is that dry food can be acceptable, but go with what your vet recommends. Or something like that. My old cat, Marvin (c. 12 years) has been diagnosed as being asthmatic. Being closed in in my dusty little cabin all winter probably doesn't help. More seriously, blood tests showed a significantly elevated T4 level - Hyperthyroidism. The test is going to be repeated in a few weeks to confirm the condition, but it looks that Marvin is going to be on treatment drug(s) for the rest of his life. Another symptom in Marvin is that he's gotten more spunky, and he's eating and drinking more. He's gained weight, although the longer term symptom would be weight loss. Either radiation treatment or drug treatment is usually very effective at controlling hyperthyroidism. The radiation treatment is a permanent fix, but is more expensive. A friend's cat got nuked (radioactive iodine, I think) for hyperthyroidism and seems to be cured, but the whole diagnosis and treatment program ran about $1500. That cat was also on drug treatment for heart complications. The cat's heart is now apparently fine. Moose
