Members, admins: Good topic titles important part of Proposed New Topics
I have just modified the title of the YEC Age of Earth question (false appearance of age?) topic, by adding the "(false appearance of age?)" part.
The previous version, "YEC Age of Earth question" is but one of numerous examples of titles I file under "pretty worthless". It certainly didn't help in preventing topic drift.
People, let's get good topic titles, that help define the topic theme, on the topic right from the beginnings. I also push the various "Proposed New Topics" reviewing admins to be more picky about topic titles.

Re: Off-topic "virgin" comment
I was hoping I could get away with one off-topic comment, but then jar answered me so maybe it should go somewhere else.
There is pretty much no such thing as just one off-topic comment. One leads to others.
If you find that existing rejected PNT unsuitable, which you have, and you wish to pursue some sort of "virgin" discussion, then a new PNT is called for. Otherwise the issue can be declared closed.
All this is getting away from the intentions of this topic. I gave this topic mention because it is the place to request reconsideration of a rejected PNT.

The"YEC Problem with Science Above and Beyond Evolution" topic

My message 25 there:

Thank you. Hope the topic is not too broad.
Yes, I'm real slow getting on this one, but better late than never.
The content of message 1 is a nice little summary of the many conflicts between mainstream science and young Earth creationism, and as such it is essentially a perfect example of a topic having way too many highly diverse subthemes.
In other words, the topic a WAY TOO BROAD. Sorry AdminNWR, but this one should never have been promoted.
Will leave open a bit longer for messages in preparation and closing remarks.
Topic closing in 15 minutes. Those who don't agree with my opinion and actions may respond at "Thread...", link below.

I have just closed this topic because I think it is way to diversely themed. I've already heard back, in the "Private Administration Forum", from 3 other admins who disagree with my actions.
Since this situation concerns a topic that I think never should have been promoted, I bring the discussion to this topic.

Re: Iano's "Moral Argument for God"
1 Transcendant objective values of good and evil only exist if God exists.
The above suggestion is good, but... - The premise 1 of the PNT is rather muddled.
Are we doing "If God, then..." or are we doing "If..., then God"?
Your suggestion could be rephrased "If God exists, then transcendant objective values of good and evil exist". Iano seems to be doing "If transcendant objective values of good and evil exist, then God exists".

Attn RAZD: Re: Your mega-PNT in progress
While your "Age Correlations and An Old Earth, Version 2 Part I" topic is looking to be quite a opus (insert favorite Penguin joke here), it seems to be way to massive and diverse to qualify as a proper debate topic (not that that stopped the previous edition).
Perhaps the thing to do is to file it in the "Columnist Corner" forum as a reference paper, but have said topic closed to dabate. The URL would be a good thing for you to have in your "signature".
More specific aspects of of it can then be spun-off as more focused new topics.

Re: PRATT alert!
The immediate problem is that there are 4 or 5 themes in the "Proposed New Topic" (PNT). To varying degrees they are PRATT's (points refuted a thousand times), heavily discussed in previous topics. Are we in the situation that "it's all been discussed before" - Time to shut the forum down?
Anyhow, I invite you to bring your PRATT concerns to the What is an Articulate Informed Creationist topic. I'm certainly interested in what the evolution side members hope to find in creationist opponents. What would you consider to be characteristics of a "good creationist opponent"?

Because I wanted to give "Phathead" a bit of a hard time? And also send some action to http://www.worldwideword.net/dreamcatcher/index.php?
OK, I'll promote the topic.

Re: Regarding "Points for a creator" by alaninnont
A "Great Debate" sure sounds like the way to go. That proposed topic is so bloated that I don't see refining it down as being practice. A whole new PNT would be the way to go.
I'm enough of a jerk to be willing to bypass AdminNosy and promote the topic myself. I, however, would strongly suggest you not do a one person "pile on the creationist". Try handling the subtopic in small bites. Also, let's keep the attitudes thoroughly on the "Minnesota Nice" plane of things.

It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.
Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots. Source

NOT THE PLACE TO DEBATE CONTENT OF UNPROMOTED PNT
If zi ko wants to elaborate on the Proposed New Topic content, s/he should do such at New theory about evolution between creationism and evolution.
It's kind of looking like that PNT is going to need promoting, even if it's not up to standards. I'm not yet going to do such, but we shall see what happens.
Or something like that.

The "Quantum Physics" PNT
Quantum Physics
Message 1:
Son Goku writes:
Hello!,
A while ago I derailed a thread about Dark Matter and started explaining quantum mechanics. I really enjoyed the thread, but became busy and slacked off. I'd really like to do it again as there were some great questions and I'm now free to devote time to the thread for a good long period.
I realise this is a debate forum so I was conscious of disrupting a debate thread (I still did it though), so would there be any place where such a thread is appropriate? Possibly coffee house, but maybe there are others?
Message 2:
Admin writes:
These kinds of topics generally go in the Big Bang and Cosmology forum, but if there's no tie-in to the creation/evolution debate then Coffee House would be a better place. I'd really rather have this in the Big Bang and Cosmology forum - can you recall any of the creation/evolution issues that prompted the departure into quantum physics?
My perspective is that such a topic should go into a science forum even if an evolution/creationism conflict isn't presented in the opening message. Just a matter of topic theme organization, if nothing else. Besides, there is a good chance an evo/creo aspect will develop.
A problem with message 1, is that there is no specific debate theme there - There is no discussion launching point and it is not really properly promotable out of the "Proposed New Topics" forum. What Son Goku needs to do, is to bring one or two of those "great questions" into the topic starter message, and present a bit of his perspective about those questions.

Re: Improve the new topic proposal guidelines
Your topic starting permissions have been restored.
There has been a discussion of this situation at the "General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures (aka 'The Whine List')" topic - The current most recent relevant message is here. I don't offhand have much to add to what was said there. What I do have to say is, a relatively new member showing up and doing 7 new PNTs directed at a particular member is rather troll like behavior. Thou had succeeded in irritating the moose. Or something like that.

Every once in a while I like to let a spammer have a chance, just for the ambience
The party in question looked pretty dubious, but I couldn't really pin any spammer history on him. His (2) spam messages have been banished to a viewable by admins only place.
About 95% of this forums registration attempts are by people I can document as being spammers, and they get permanently suspended without ever getting their registration approved.
Probably about half of those that I do approve, never complete the registration process, and just disappear from the record.
See EvC Forum: Information to get an idea of the number of spammers I reject. Note all the little red dots in the far right column.
