Smudge (my avatar) nearly died yesterday.
He had a blocked urethra with crystals forming at the end of his penis. Fortunately we got him to the Vets in time and he was operated on and seems to be okay now. I'm so very relieved.

I don't know if your vet mentioned this, but Smudge will be vulnerable to this condition from now on. You need to keep an eye out.
There's a special diet these kitties need to be on, too. I'm so glad Smudge is OK.

Yeah, we got him on a diet and we are aware of the likely hood of future crystal build up.
We fed him on dry food but that's changed, now. His best mate (Fletcher) is also on a wet diet, even though she is less prone (larger urethra). Going to be vigilant for that splayed (full bladder gait) from now on.

This is a not uncommon problem seem at the vet clinic I work at. Earlier this week we had a (male?) cat that was blocked up.
My cat Hiss (RIP, currently in the avatar) had a less severe variation of the problem, which I think was largely instigated by the cheap food I had been using. Cheap food has a way of not being so cheap in the long run. Hiss never totally blocked up, but did have blood showing up in her urine. Off the top of my head, the common problem is magnesium phosphate crystals, accompanied by a urine basic pH. I believe (but may be wrong), that urine pH should be a little on the acid side. I suspect Smudge is currently on the Hill's s/d variety diet, or something equivalent. s/d is available in dry or canned, and is for short term treatment use. The c/d variety (dry or canned) is for longer term use, although my impression is that c/d is generally not needed real long term. My impression is that dry food can be acceptable, but go with what your vet recommends. Or something like that. My old cat, Marvin (c. 12 years) has been diagnosed as being asthmatic. Being closed in in my dusty little cabin all winter probably doesn't help. More seriously, blood tests showed a significantly elevated T4 level - Hyperthyroidism. The test is going to be repeated in a few weeks to confirm the condition, but it looks that Marvin is going to be on treatment drug(s) for the rest of his life. Another symptom in Marvin is that he's gotten more spunky, and he's eating and drinking more. He's gained weight, although the longer term symptom would be weight loss. Either radiation treatment or drug treatment is usually very effective at controlling hyperthyroidism. The radiation treatment is a permanent fix, but is more expensive. A friend's cat got nuked (radioactive iodine, I think) for hyperthyroidism and seems to be cured, but the whole diagnosis and treatment program ran about $1500. That cat was also on drug treatment for heart complications. The cat's heart is now apparently fine. Moose

Should the medical troubles of pets be included under the holy grail of a nationwide single-payer health coverage? I say yes & yes. Up to a point. Dependent deductions - sometime I think that all Adoptions should be a bigger deduction - nay, a direct tax credit - and so maybe your 1st 2 children should be a deduction and the 3rd maybe a half-deduction. Any over that - no - you are contributing to overpopulation and should be penalized. So cats - what about the woman who has 249 cats in her house? Should she get a deduction for them all? No! Maybe for the first 2? Same as it ever was? Dogs, chickens, horses, cows, ducks, boa constrictors, lizard fish, ferrets, chimpanzees, tetras, slime mold, tarantulas, frogs, rattlers, falcons, etc. - WHATEVER - if they are pets being supported by the person. So where is that point? Another topic, methinks. Pets???? A very denigrating term. Life Companions is much better. Food for thought, as I munch down on a chicken wing. BTW - cat person here (Pluto & the Junebug). - xongsmith, 5.7d

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him. For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way. For is this done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness. For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer. For he rolls upon prank to work it in. For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself. For this he performs in ten degrees. For first he looks upon his fore-paws to see if they are clean. For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there. For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the fore-paws extended. For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood. For fifthly he washes himself. For Sixthly he rolls upon wash. For Seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat. For Eighthly he rubs himself against a post. For Ninthly he looks up for his instructions. For Tenthly he goes in quest of food. For having consider’d God and himself he will consider his neighbour. For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness. For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it chance. For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying. For when his day’s work is done his business more properly begins. For he keeps the Lord’s watch in the night against the adversary. For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes. For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life. For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him. For he is of the tribe of Tiger. For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger. For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses. For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation. For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he’s a good Cat.... -- Christopher Smart

How to give a cat a pill:
1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand.2. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. 3. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. 4. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. 5. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. I recently moved, and now have two room mates. one of them is some sort of "animal lover" and has two dogs, two cats, and a bearded dragon.
I have to say it is the most disgusting place I have ever lived, there is hair everywhere, but the rent is cheap. after 3 months I think I can vote in the poll honestly. even though they contribute to the hair problem substantially, I have to still go with dogs. If I could find a way to kill the cats without the room mate finding out I would have done so already. They may be the worst pet ever.

What a colossal twat that man is: letting a cat get that fat is going to give it diabetes.

Probably lives in an apartment people in apartments should not have pets that need loads of room to roam, or have their pets on a diet but that is not nice. My pets get all the food they want they just dont get fat because they have loads of terrain to roam and hunt or whatever.
His cat is probably not getting enough exercise. An odd question do they have insulin shots and tests for cats ? Or are they screwed when they get diabetes? Edited by frako, : No reason given.
