This poll shows what many believe(I know not on a grand scale).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I created this topic for people to post statistics/polls on belief vs. no belief (I know I started an argument on this, but I don't want to start that here, therefore I am submitting to you atheists out there, here) or evolution vs. creation etc. Anything discussed here at EvC you can submit a statistic or poll to show what people believe on those subjects.

See

I have read of this survey before. Basically it suggests that the percentage of a wide range of scientists who are believers is 40 and that this hasn't changed over the last century.

You do realize that web polls have almost no statistical validity?

"Statistic on belief in God, apparently from this, most people do."
Could you please define "most"? I would take that as being sort of say, 2/3 or even 80+ percent.
quote:
Despite the decline in church membership in recent years, many people believe in some form of deity. When asked in the 1998 BSA about their religious beliefs, over one in five people agreed with the statement I know God really exists and I have no doubts about it while only one in ten people said they did not believe in God. In the same survey people were asked about other religious beliefs. One in two people said they definitely or probably believed in life after death while about one in three said that they definitely or probably did not. About half of people professed a lack of belief in religious miracles.
Could you point out the part in the above that you think makes it "most" rather than maybe a majority but not an overwhelming one.

The problem with a poll such as this is that no two people seem to agree on the definition of God. The concept has such a broad definition that it can mean virtually anything. In the words of Viktor Frankl, "The more comprehensive a definition is, the less comprehensible it becomes."
In that case, we can't really say that two people's professions of belief in God are comparable, because their degree of consensus can't truly be determined.

Well, lets see here... most.. how could that possible be 2/3 80%?? It could be less than that... such as 50.000000000000001%? That would still be the majority, yes. And that Majority is basically Most.
What would Dictionary.com have to say on the subject?:
"The majority of the people; the masses: The many fail, the one succeeds (Tennyson). "
Hmm Majority they say...
Well, thats one thing they say at least.

Yea, I agree, the technical definition is such. I'm just used to using most to mean a larger proportion than that. That's why I asked what most meant here.
In fact, I'm not sure about that poll at all. I've surprised the number is so low!! I'm pretty sure that more carefully done polls would put the percentage in the US up in the 75 to 85 range.

Last poll i saw said that in Sweden (where i come from),
less than 10% of the population belive in the christian god.
that about ~60%-70% said they believed in some force or *something*.
During the 80th the Soviet sent a deligation trying to investigate what the Swedish government had done to make the whole population almost complete non-believing. (In the USSR they banned religion, but people still belived)
They were perplexed to find out that nothing had been done at all.
Concerning polls, all countries do not have a bible-belt like the USA.

You're right. If we left God up to people's definition, a large portion of the earth's population would be believers. If we defined God, say according to Christianity, we would get a lower but more accurate statistic.
I started a thread like this a while back on the Free for All forum. It was foolish of me, I know, and the statistics only proved what we all knew anyway:
75% of the forum is made up of evolutionists
7.5% of the forum is made up of crashfrog

LOL, Defender, *only* 7.5 % !!!
As for the 75%, could you do something to recruit more creationists to balance things?
What changes could be made to encourage them while still maintaining a real debate?
I notice that most of the topics are on religion and the bible, which, while interesting, really have not much to do with the formation of life on earth. I guess this is to placate the creationists we do have, since they at least think they know something about it.

I don't know. My entire family are rabid fundamentalist creationists but this board wouldn't really suit them. I am acquainted with a creation scientist, but he's probably too busy.
It would be comparatively easy to increase the proportion of crashfrog. If we just ban everyone else...
