Von Cullen writes: I didn't say I wasn't an evolutionist... You accept a theory where 99% of its arguments are refuted by the scientific literature? And whose arguments you don't share, since you referred to them as "your arguments"? Interesting. You might consider trying to come up with less hyperbolic statements than the ones from your first post. They got you some attention, but not necessarily the kind you want. --Percy

It refutes 99% of the arguments made on this and many other on line forums If you really are a molecular biologist and you really do think that 99% of the arguments made here are PRATTS then in the name of education I have setup a thread for you to give more detail. See here Message 1 I suggest that you start by highlighting some of the arguments in favour of evolution that you have seen presented here that you consider to be PRATTs

It refutes 99% of the arguments made on this and many other on line forums. Someone should tell the creationists ... they haven't managed to refute any of our arguments. But you've just joined today and already you know how flawed 99% of our arguments are. Lucky you! I think you should help 'em out with your vast knowledge of the scientific literature.

Contrary to one posters previous quote, science cannot explain the origins of life. It cannot explain the thousands of molecular mechanisms needed in order for change to take place across an entire species, and so on.

Contrary to one posters previous quote, science cannot explain the origins of life. Can you point me to this quote?
It cannot explain the thousands of molecular mechanisms needed in order for change to take place across an entire species, and so on. I wonder what you think you're talking about.

Welcome to the fray Von Cullen,
Contrary to one posters previous quote, ... You can link your reply directly to this previous post by using the message reply button:![]() ... and then your message is linked to the one you are replying to (adds clarity) so we know who you are talking about. You can also look at the way a post is formated with the "peek" button next to it. Another way to add clarity AND content to your message is to quote the persons comment: type [qs]quotes are easy[/qs] and it becomes:

Just so we keep this thread on topic, this thread isn't about the origin of life or the molecular mechanisms of species change. You can find plenty of threads on those topics over at the [forum=-5] and [forum=-13] forums.

It cannot explain the thousands of molecular mechanisms needed in order for change to take place across an entire species, and so on. Contrary to one posters previous quote, science cannot explain the origins of life. It cannot explain the thousands of molecular mechanisms needed in order for change to take place across an entire species, and so on. This is an evolved form of the Paley Watchmaker argument. It was dealt with in Origin of Species where Darwin illustrated the evolution of the complex eye through intermediate steps that could be seen in lineal species.
In the Articulata we can commence a series with an optic nerve merely coated with pigment, and without any other mechanism; and from this low stage, numerous gradations of structure, branching off in two fundamentally different lines, can be shown to exist, until we reach a moderately high stage of perfection. . . With these facts, here far too briefly and imperfectly given, which show that there is much graduated diversity in the eyes of living crustaceans, and bearing in mind how small the number of living animals is in proportion to those which have become extinct, I can see no very great difficulty (not more than in the case of many other structures) in believing that natural selection has converted the simple apparatus of an optic nerve merely coated with pigment and invested by transparent membrane, into an optical instrument as perfect as is possessed by any member of the great Articulate class. Origin of Species, chapter 6
source When it became apparent that larger complex features could be explained by extant and extinct species (the mammalian middle ear is another good example) the creationists moved to systems which could not leave a fossil record, namely cellular microscopic systems such as bacterial flagellum. With zero chance of a fossil record they wouldn't have to worry about those pesky transitional fossils.

Defeated in their "strengths and weaknesses" language, conservative members of the Texas State Board of Education still succeeded in promoting a creationist agenda when they pushed through a series of amendments addressing topics like evolution and the big bang. Details are in today's NYT:
The article may require a subscription, but it's free. The strategy now appears to be to attack science piecemeal at the secondary school level. --Percy
