Re: Inductive Reasoning (Again)
It's a very good reason, though, to think that when yet another person claims that they know about a real GOD that, in fact, they're talking about yet another product of the human imagination.
No, we can't disprove the existence of GOD, but there's so ridiculously little idea to think there might be that there's no reason to even entertain it as a possibility.

Okay, I can accept that you and I read the post differently.

I kinda agree unless and until they can provide the evidence that can be tested as we can with the age of the earth, evolution and other things which can be objectively tested.
Yet I still believe there is a GOD.

This is not a chat room - support your earlier claims or retract them.
Since you clearly are unable to support your claims: you should retract them.

Re: Inductive Reasoning (Again)
Are highly evidenced conclusions and explanations more likely to be correct than unevidenced claims? Or not?
Really jar there is no other context in which you would find this simple question so difficult to answer.
jar writes:
As I pointed out to you in the past, I do not believe there can ever be subjective evidence for GOD or that it is likely that while we are still alive we can even find any OBJECTIVE evidence for GOD.
Well if there is absolutely nothing to suggest that this concept you call GOD actually exists then the idea that such a thing does exist must be sourced from human imagination. How could it possibly be otherwise?
jar writes:

That humans can and do invent supernatural beings is a highly objectively evidenced phenomenon.

This is the Peanut Gallery of the Coffeehouse, dammit. It is the EvC equivalent of a chat room. It's a place to throw peanut shells at the performers in the other rooms. It's a place for snide, snarky comments aimed at each other where they don't fit anywhere else in EvC, with the possible exception of the Humor Threads in the Coffeehouse. It's a place where evidence of your opinion is not required.
While sitting back in my rose-pink cadillac, i started to notice a continuing trend.
This is my bluegene Scale - the numbers with little d's after them is a first cut GUESS on the Dawkin's Scale numbers and needs corrections.

All of the supporters AND the originator are from the UK. Maybe there should be a theory of inductive reasoning that, if you are from the UK, you will support your countryman's theory out of a combination of cultural bias and national pride.

You have noticed something that may not be coincidence, but your hypothesis misses the mark. Try again. I'll give you a clue. Levels of supernaturalism are far from uniform throughout the world. Guess which country has the highest level in the "Western World".

Re: Inductive Reasoning (Again)
Yawn.
All those asked and answered. many times over.
But I will do so again just for you.
Are highly evidenced conclusions and explanations more likely to be correct than unevidenced claims? Or not?
LOL. Yes, but that has nothing to do with GOD. They can also be wrong.
Well if there is absolutely nothing to suggest that this concept you call GOD actually exists then the idea that such a thing does exist must be sourced from human imagination. How could it possibly be otherwise?
It could be"imparted knowledge".
That humans can and do invent supernatural beings is a highly objectively evidenced phenomenon.
Which I don't think I have questioned.
But that has NOTHING to do with whether or not GOD exists.
Thank you for your contribution and I of course, you are free to believe anything.

Re: Inductive Reasoning (Again)
bluegenes asks:

The United States of America.
Shame on our wicked ways, shame on our abysmal ignorance, shame on our misdirected pride, shame on our cowboy mentality.
The Aussies have a lot to learn, yet, about decadence....
Kudos to John Lennon for jumping into the pit of all this human tragedy into the center of it's most visible decadence, NYC. It killed him, but he had the courage to escape the draconian tax laws in england and settle where? - not Burlington Vermont - that socialist infestation on the land, not San Francisco - hot bed of perversions unchained and great weather, not Vancouver etc, not Madison Wisconsin or Austin Texas or Ann Arbor Michigan or Boston Massachusetts or Toronto - NO. In NYC.
John Lennon chose the center of all the baddest there is.
Who is the popular leader in Atheism now? We had the wonderful Mark Twain, who is still rampant in our speech, John as mentioned, then....
Even that fucking Dylan turns out to have long been a Christer. Nevermind that he's also an Elvister and a Cashman and a George Jones fan. If you are looking for deluded humans, the USA has it in spades, so to speak.
sidebar: Black atheists in popular music:
ah, this all gets beyond the peanut shells.....

Re: Inductive Reasoning (Again)
jar writes:
Yawn.
If I am keeping you awake maybe you should bear in mind that you initiated this conversation by objecting to gods being included in a list of conclusions pertaining to a variety of equally evidentially baseless, unfalsifiable propositions. Message 1332
After a bit of to and fro it becomes clear that your objection is based on nothing more than highlighting the possibility that evidence based conclusions may not be correct. The same of course applies equally to ALL evidence based conclusions. Including all of the others in my list. None of which you felt the same need to object to.
Straggler writes:
Are highly evidenced conclusions and explanations more likely to be correct than unevidenced claims? Or not?
jar writes:
Yes, but that has nothing to do with GOD.
It has as much to do with the likelihood of conclusions about the concept you call GOD as it does anything else. Why wouldn’t it
jar writes:
They can also be wrong.
So what? So could any evidence based conclusion. The conclusion that evolution actually occurred could be wrong.
jar writes:
I don't believe in evolution. I have concluded that evolution is a fact.
And in doing so you have rejected the evidentially baseless propositions of Last Thursdayism, Satan planting evidence to lead us to ungodly conclusions and all sorts of other baseless but unfalsifiable conceivable alternatives.
jar writes:
It could be "imparted knowledge".
As might any knowledge of any other evidentially baseless conceived proposition or entity. But if I told you I had imparted knowledge that Last Thursdayism was true I suspect you would be characteristically scathing. Likewise if a creationist came here declaring that they had imparted knowledge that the evidence for evolution had been planted by Satan to fool us you would treat their baseless disprovable claims with all the disdain they deserve. Only when it comes to your own belief in GOD do all the rules suddenly change.
jar writes:
But that has NOTHING to do with whether or not GOD exists.
I will leave it to you to ponder how likely it is that a baselessly conceived figment of human imagination is to actually exist. Needless to say I don’t think it very likely.

Of all the places in the US I would imagine that NYC is just about the least God fearing.
In comparison to the rest of the country it is almost European in it's enlightened attitudes to such things
