Re: Does it exist?
Gee, then Dr. A must be ecstatic daily.
Why is that you folks hate science so bitterly?

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

I believe there will eventually, a particle discovered for every known force that exist.

It may not happen in my lifetime, but I agree,. No matter how many times science has been wrong it has always moved us forward, learning from our mistakes as we go. A set back will only be temporary.

Re: Does it exist?
Your ignorance of how science works amazes me.
If there is no Higgs Boson found it mean they got the maths wrong and need to go back and check their figures.
But how could they know to do that without performing experiments to try to find it?
Can't you even see that?
Or are you so invested in rubbishing people you don't know that your knee jerk reaction to any one with a PhD is negative?

No, absolutely not. There is no "wrong" maths. As far as we can tell at our current level of understanding of the Universe, the Higgs Mechanism is a viable model of electroweak symmetry breaking, and the Higgs Boson is a natural prediction of the Higgs Mechanism.
If the Higgs Boson does not exist, it simply means that the Universe does not work that way. Peter Higgs was not "wrong" to suggest the mechanism - it is an extremely valuable part of mathematical/theoretical physics. The only people who are "wrong" are the ignorant idiots that mock from the sidelines - idiots who will never appreciate the simple joy of understanding more about the Universe, without question of who is "right" and who is "wrong".

Re: Does it exist?
Well I do beg your pardon, I'm sure.
My understanding was that the Higgs Boson was predicted from a mathematical model.
While I am very happy to be corrected I do hope you aren't lumping me in with the ignorant idiots that mock from the sidelines.

Re: Does it exist?

Consider it done.
My understanding was that the Higgs Boson was predicted from a mathematical model.
It is. And if one were to claim that this model is definitely the way that the Universe behaves, then one would be leaving oneself open to be being wrong. But no-one of whom I am aware is doing that. We are simply asking the question: "is this model the way the Universe behaves?" I have always found it difficult to be wrong when simply asking a question.
While I am very happy to be corrected I do hope you aren't lumping me in with the ignorant idiots that mock from the sidelines.
Well, if you have to ask...
Edited by cavediver, : No reason given.

Re: Does it exist?
Larni, there is a difference between the model being wrong and the mathematics being wrong. If the model uses incorrect assumptions it is very likely that it will produce the wrong results when the mathematics is done correctly. If there is a problem it is far more likely to be in the assumptions underlying the model, not in the mathematics.

Exactly. And the test of those assumptions is... seeing if the predicted results are born out in experiments at the LHC.

Re: Does it exist?
Well, if the Higgs Boson is shown to not exist then suddenly everything will become mass-less.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I see the distinction; my bad.
So, if they don't find the Higgs Boson they need to go back and check their assumptions?
