Re: Hollowed Out Middle Class
I totally understand where jar is coming from. We all need to compete and seek education and improve our overall value at work.
My basic gripe is kinda in line with what you say, xongsmith. These corporations are ruthless. One is either a stockholder/executive/management team or one is a serf.(labor)
And the US middle class is being trashed. It is one of the events that will in my opinion lead to World War III.
We are not nor will we ever be exploited. There are far more guns (and religious nut jobs) in the US than in any other country, and the Arab Spring is mild in comparison to what shall be unleashed here in the US if the Politicians don't do what we pay them to do.
The corporations, unfortunately, are global these days, and we cant easily cut the head off of that beast, though I think that raising corporate taxes would help alleviate pressure on already overextended US taxpayers.

WWIII?
Who exactly would the US fight?

World War III Ad Nauseum
It will be a different war from the previous two World Wars. It will be the people...the working class of the world..against the wealthy. We will, however, take out Iran and North Korea in the process. This war is an economic war as much as anything...it will be a war to secure resources before China gets them.

HUH?
Just how do you secure resources with a war?
Just how to you fight the wealthy?

Re: World War III Ad Nauseum
It would not be easy...in fact it would prove quite challenging. The wealthy own the resources and the armies themselves. I'll have to think this one through.
My premise, however, is that their "bill" is unreasonable and that they should simply take the loss rather than the majority of us.
We would have to somehow organize ourselves without "them" without any of us turning into pigs(animal farm reference) ourselves.

Actually, actually, being corrosive would mean that it is the one doing the damage
I'm not aware of a term for a property of a metal for how resistant it is to corrosion... like, "Corrosibility" or something.
There is no suitable antonym for corrosive relative to metals. One would have to apply a phrase such as corrosive resistant..

How about non-corrosive.

Not so Jar. It is one of the more corrosive resistant of the metals and one of the highest conductible ones to electricity.
It's relative scarcity and desirability for Jewelry, etc qualifies it as a precious metal Thus the stability of monetary systems which have backed promissory notes, i.e. bills, by silver and gold.
Due to it's cost, it's use is limited to specialty components, etc which warrant it's use.
quote:
Silver (Chemical symbol Ag) is a brilliant gray white metal that is quite soft and malleable. It is quite resistant to corrosion and does not oxidize easily, although it readily forms a surface tarnish of silver sulfide. A modern and comprehensive document on the subject is the second edition of the classic CORROSION BASICS textbook.
Compare the thermodynamic or chemical energy of metals
Of all the metals, it is the best conductor of electricity.........

Re: Corrosive Resistant
Do you ever even read what you quote? Did you see where it said "although it readily forms a surface tarnish of silver sulfide."?
Silver is not used widely in electronics.
And guess what, it is a stupid base for a currency standard. Have you ever noticed how many folk are trying to sell you their gold for paper money?

How do you figure "stability", Buz? Every time they mine some silver, it inflates any silver note currency. Last year they mined almost a billion troy ounces of silver. Gold is even worse.
Anybody can go in and mine some silver, Buz. The US dollar has the major advantage that the only source of them is the Federal Reserve Bank.

How about non-corrosive.
That term would not apply to the context of our discussion. That silver is non-corrosive means it would not corrode other things. The context of this discussion is that it is not readily corroded, i.e. corrosive resistant.
H2SO4 applied to test silver will turn it gray but will not corrode it as with iron or brass. Lead, also is corrosive resistant, but not scarce and not suitable for jewelry, etc. It lacks desirability.
Thus again, the reason silver & gold have traditionally been considered precious metals, suitable for monetary backing.

Mmm, Crashfrog. Anybody? How and where? where??; where???. What are you waiting for????
How come there's never, in human history, been enough gold and silver to render it as value-less as paper? There has never been enough to depreciate its value.
Monetarily, inflation devaluates. due to the unlimited availability of paper.

They're not just trying. There are ready buyers anxious to buy. They're either suckers, needy, market traders or acquiring cash for highly profitable enterprises, etc.
abe: There are not many trying to sell me gold. I'm not a gold buyer, perse. There are more profitable ways to use my limited cash. My income does not warrant accumulation of it. I have other non-paper assets which will be best for me at my age.
