You say this like it's a bad thing....
He left an anti-God and anti-Christian, aggressively vocal, atheistic legacy up to the end.
Ya don't say.... I woulda never guessed it. Did you ever think that is precisely the legacy he wanted to leave? I also notice you leave out his oratory prowess. Is that because you didn't understand a single word he ever uttered because his command of the english language was greater than you could ever dream to grasp?
Leave it to the religious to be twats upon the death of someone... Moral highground my fucking ass.

Even better, it is, to have Hitch read it to you himself, as he has been all day to me. I'll admit that I'm not at all well read (I can't remember the last time I actually picked up a book) but this book is a fucking amazing piece of literature.

Re: Afterlife Surprises
Oh Im sorry, I must be mistaken, as much time as Christopher spent blasphemeing The God of the Old and New testament, Im surpised he was even aware of Allah
One does have to wonder why a man like Christopher would spend so much energy and time, belittling, berating and demeaning an entity for which he didnt even believed existed
Had you spent even half as much time reading up on the man to whom you espouse so much vitriol, you would know the answer to those questions as he has answered both many times over. However, I doubt you would be able to grasp even a single sentence spoken or written by Hitch. Your head would probably explode.

Re: Afterlife Surprises
I'll just assume you are trolling (and thus endeth the lesson) because anyone who would make such gross mischaracterizations about someone whom they just spent a number of posts criticizing would most certainly have to be a troll.

Re: Speaking Ill of the Dead
i'm just occasionally taken aback by the malignancy of some who would call themselves Christians.
This is something I think Hitch was trying to change: giving Christians the benefit of the doubt that they do actually have the moral high ground, so that when they act putrid and vial, we point it out as we do and claim they are somehow being hypocritical. If, instead, we see them for what they are: immature and close minded, in need of a sky-daddy to dictate their life and give them meaning, it should come as no surprise when they act like complete and utter twats when confronted with evidence or opinion that contradicts their beliefs.

Re: Your god is a piece of dung
Do peoples beliefs exist.
Peoples beliefs are irrelevant. We are talking about whether or not this god fella exists. It should exist irrespective of the beliefs of human beings.
If your mom or sister believed God existed would you speak of thier God this way at Christmas dinner
I most certainly would for the exact same reasons as Pressie. If the topic of religion came up at any dinner, x-mas or otherwise, I would voice my opinion. My family knows of my atheism because I make know attempt to hide it. I am almost certain that you or any other evangelical would take no issue talking about jeebus to a Jew during Hanukah, or to a Muslim during the Day of Ashura. The only time christians find the need to respect beliefs of others is when atheists talk shit about theirs. Beliefs are no sacred thing. Faith is not a virtue. Until religionists can grow up and realize that, true enlightenment shall never occur.

What are some of the more controversial positions he's taken?
For starters: his position on the Iraq war and seemingly implicit support of GWB. His paycheck came from journalism, but his rise to fame was his atheism. So, in that respect, a lot of people see him as more of a champion for the freethought/atheist movement.
I don't care about the atheism stuff
Then you don't really care about Hitch. His polemic debates with religious types, his vocal opinions against all things religious, are what made Hitch, Hitch. You will notice that he wasn't "center stage" until the release of God is not Great. It wasn't until then that any of the other main players even heard of or met him (Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Dawkins).
What I have also noticed is that the dissenting views of him never really came out until he died. It would appear that no one had the cojones to call him out on his controversial opinions. Yes, people mentioned it, but not in the magnitude that people are talking about it now.
Now, I could be wrong because I enjoyed watching/listening to Hitch debate religious figures, not for his political views because that his what I saw him as: a champion for the "New Atheists", if you will.

I mean C'mon, MOTHER TERESA!?!.
Most definitely Mother Theresa. I know you see her through your catholic rose colored glasses, but perhaps before launching into a tirade, you would do well to see what he actually wrote and said about her. Ah well, that would require honesty, integrity and fortitude on your behalf and I would think myself a fool to expect that from you.

And where was this great patron saint, herself, treated when she fell ill? That's right: the best hospitals money could buy.

The difference is: Christopher Hitchens actually existed. We have actual hard evidence: videos, pictures, writings. Can you say the same about jesus? I suppose you would feel just as upset if we mocked the Easter Bunny, too?

Re: Afterlife Surprises
In typical creationist/religionist fashion, you've went through this whole thread bashing Christopher Hitchens, and you have no idea about anything at all about the man. you have NO idea what the book "God is not Great" is actually about because had you a clue, you would know that the full title continues "How Religion Poisons Everything" and how the book rarely, if ever, touches on the absentness of this god character. Had you spent as much time even reading a synopsis of his life as you have posting bullshit about him, you wouldn't look so much like a fool AND you might have learned something. However, it has become glaringly obvious that you've have an aversion, almost an allergic reaction to, learning.
