Top Ten Signs You're a Foolish Atheist (Note - i'm not the author and this was written in responce to "Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian")

10. You vigorously deny the existence of God, yet you frequently blame Him for all the "evils" in the world, all the natural disasters, and everything else under the sun that is wrong in modern society.

9. You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when creationists say that people were created in the image and likeness of God, but you have no problem with the evolutionist claim that we all evolved from slime by a cosmic accident.

8. You criticize fundamental Christians who believe the Bible, and say that it can't possibly be true because it's just a book written by mere men, yet you never question any of Darwin's writings or Richard Dawkins' books.

7. You can't seem to understand the primary differences between fundamental Muslims and fundamental Christians (hint: strap-on TNT. Plus - Muhammad says, “kill innocent people and yourself if you love me.” Jesus Christ said, “I’ll die for you because I love you”).

6. You say the Bible is full of fairytales and fables, yet you believe all life forms including plants, trees, insects, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals evolved from one species into another - As if evolution isn’t the biggest fairytale of them all.

5. You laugh at the Supernatural, even though scientists have calculated the odds of life forming by natural processes to be estimated less than 1 chance in 10 to the 40,ooo power – But you find nothing wrong with believing that billions of years full of random mutations would result in the impossible.

4. You accuse fundamental Christians of being intolerant, judgmental and hateful, while you foam at the mouth calling them freaking lunatics, ignorant, weak-minded, stupid fundies, and hateful bigots.

3. You ignore scientific concepts like cause and effect, and you don't realize that a closed system can be defined however the observer wants, so you throw out technological phrases to try to ignore the implications of thermodynamics by saying the laws of physics are not set in stone.

2. While all evidence, logic and reasoning point to a Creator and absolute truth, you prefer to hide behind relativism and a theory of evolution which does not, in fact, describe the creation of the universe at all, or why concepts of good and evil or morality exist.

1. *Atheism fails to adequately explain the existence of eternal, unchanging truths, for it rejects the existence of an eternal unchanging mind. Atheism cannot offer man any eternal significance whatsoever. Temporary meaning in life is insufficient, for our accomplishments die with the death of the universe -- there is no ultimate purpose in a universe void of God.

10. You vigorously deny the existence of God, yet you frequently blame Him for all the "evils" in the world, all the natural disasters, and everything else under the sun that is wrong in modern society.

Actually most of us just point out there is no evidence for the existence of god, just like there is no evidence for the existence of the pink unicorn. So no reason to believe in either.

9. You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when creationists say that people were created in the image and likeness of God, but you have no problem with the evolutionist claim that we all evolved from slime by a cosmic accident.

Option 1 i am a toy of a magical being and if i dont play by his rules he throws me in a furnace where i burn for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever .....

Option 2 i rose uppon the shoulders of my ancestors who climed up from virtually nothing.

7. You can't seem to understand the primary differences between fundamental Muslims and fundamental Christians (hint: strap-on TNT. Plus - Muhammad says, “kill innocent people and yourself if you love me.” Jesus Christ said, “I’ll die for you because I love you”).

Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:34-39 NASB)

6. You say the Bible is full of fairytales and fables, yet you believe all life forms including plants, trees, insects, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals evolved from one species into another - As if evolution isn’t the biggest fairytale of them all.

Well evolution has basis in fact, science, evidence....

the bible has basis in myth, stories, fairytales ....

5. You laugh at the Supernatural, even though scientists have calculated the odds of life forming by natural processes to be estimated less than 1 chance in 10 to the 40,ooo power – But you find nothing wrong with believing that billions of years full of random mutations would result in the impossible.

What scientists where??

4. You accuse fundamental Christians of being intolerant, judgmental and hateful, while you foam at the mouth calling them freaking lunatics, ignorant, weak-minded, stupid fundies, and hateful bigots.

Well because they/you are: freaking lunatics, ignorant, weak-minded, stupid fundies, and hateful bigots.

But i dont wish that they would burn in a lake of fire for ever and ever and ever and ever ......

3. You ignore scientific concepts like cause and effect, and you don't realize that a closed system can be defined however the observer wants, so you throw out technological phrases to try to ignore the implications of thermodynamics by saying the laws of physics are not set in stone.

the second law of THERMODYNAMICS APPLIES TO CLOSED SYSTEMS does the earth look like a system that is not getting any energy any time form sources like say the SUN?

2. While all evidence, logic and reasoning point to a Creator and absolute truth, you prefer to hide behind relativism and a theory of evolution which does not, in fact, describe the creation of the universe at all, or why concepts of good and evil or morality exist.

Um i never seen this evidence can you show me?

So does there need to be a purpose?? Or are you so arrogant you believe you are so special that you must have an ETERNAL purpose?

Remember This?
Hi Chuck,

Can I take it that this diatribe is a signal of your intent to ignore the previous threads in which you were challenged to provide an argument?

Are you planning on providing us with an actual argument in the How did the Aborigines get to Australia? thread? Or are you just going to pretend that you weren't out-argued in that thread?

Are you planning on answering your critics in the Question Evolution! thread, or are you going to act like that never happened as well?

There is also the material on living fossils that you PMd me. I gave you a fairly thorough answer to that. Don't you have anything to say on that subject?

Throwing out this kind of silly list is all very well, but the reality remains that every time you are given the opportunity to respond to us with an argument of your own, you back off, wait a while, change the subject and start over as though nothing happened and you were never proved wrong.

If you are going to keep dodging this way, I don't see the point in bothering.

Please, please, please, pick a single topic and stick with it. Choose your argument, make it and defend it. I mean, your arguments are defensible aren't they?

Mutate and Survive

That would be fucking foolish yes. However, if one were to deny the existence of god, and then sarcastically remark "oh yes, look how wonderful god is, with all the people he killed wit that tsunami", so as to indicate another reason why one doesn't believe in a god, then I wouldn't say that that would be particularly foolish.

9. You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when creationists say that people were created in the image and likeness of God, but you have no problem with the evolutionist claim that we all evolved from slime by a cosmic accident.

Yes, that would be pretty foolish also, since, one, that's not what evolution claims, and two, why would anyone feel dehumanized for what some ignorant people say about him?

8. You criticize fundamental Christians who believe the Bible, and say that it can't possibly be true because it's just a book written by mere men, yet you never question any of Darwin's writings or Richard Dawkins' books.

Yes, again, very foolish. I don't know anyone who does that though. Most atheists are perfectly happy to question both Darwin and Dawkins, and a whole bunch of other people.

7. You can't seem to understand the primary differences between fundamental Muslims and fundamental Christians (hint: strap-on TNT. Plus - Muhammad says, “kill innocent people and yourself if you love me.” Jesus Christ said, “I’ll die for you because I love you”).

Not seeing a difference between two things that are different is pretty foolish, yes. Of course that doesn't mean any of them are any good at all.

6. You say the Bible is full of fairytales and fables, yet you believe all life forms including plants, trees, insects, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals evolved from one species into another - As if evolution isn’t the biggest fairytale of them all.

Sorry, can't agree with this one, since evolution has heaps of evidence, and the bible has, well precious little. No, believing something because there is lots of evidence for it, and calling something that has precious little evidence for it a fairytale isn't exactly foolish.

5. You laugh at the Supernatural, even though scientists have calculated the odds of life forming by natural processes to be estimated less than 1 chance in 10 to the 40,ooo power – But you find nothing wrong with believing that billions of years full of random mutations would result in the impossible.

"Scientists" may have calculated that, actual scientists have no problem with this hypotheses. So no, not foolish.

4. You accuse fundamental Christians of being intolerant, judgmental and hateful, while you foam at the mouth calling them freaking lunatics, ignorant, weak-minded, stupid fundies, and hateful bigots.

Calling something for what it is is not being intolerant. If you said Stalin was a terrible person, and a mass murderer, are you being intolerant towards Stalin? Again, not foolish.

3. You ignore scientific concepts like cause and effect, and you don't realize that a closed system can be defined however the observer wants, so you throw out technological phrases to try to ignore the implications of thermodynamics by saying the laws of physics are not set in stone.

Ignoring scientific concepts is pretty foolish, yes. One wonders why creationists keep doing that.

2. While all evidence, logic and reasoning point to a Creator and absolute truth, you prefer to hide behind relativism and a theory of evolution which does not, in fact, describe the creation of the universe at all, or why concepts of good and evil or morality exist.

It's not the theory of evolution's place to describe those things. Therefore, hiding behind it to account for those things would be pretty foolish, yes. Luckily though, most atheists are smarter than creationists, and know evolution doesn't explain those things, so they point towards other explanations, that have nothing to do with evolution.

This isn't even a statement like the others are. therefore, this has nothing to do with being foolish or not. It is also completely untrue and a lie.

So, if there are any atheists who doe the foolish things, then yes, they are foolish atheists. Now, care to point out any who think these things?

Only a fool would start a list of signs of being a foolish atheist with a description of behaviour which must necessarily be that of foolish theists. And only a fool would copy and paste the other fool's obvious mistake onto a discussion board.

Now now, I think you're being a bit harsh here. Because let's be honest here, if there were someone claiming to be an atheist who would deny the existence of god, and who then subsequently were to blame said god for the injustices of the world, I'd consider that foolish to the extreme. Wouldn't you agree?

Yes, while technically, someone who blames a god for something must believe that god exists and therefore is a theist, if that someone were to call themselves an atheist, I would say they are a foolish "atheist". Of course, no atheist I know of would do this, and I think you'd be very hard pressed to find even a single one who does.

Regardless, I think one can also look at it from your perspective, which would make the claim nonsensical, kinda like the last one is.

Hi Chuck,

Several items on your list confuse atheism with science.

And all are, to understate the case, inaccurate.

As I said, necessarily.

You could call those foolish theists foolish "atheists" if you want, but that doesn't make them foolish atheists (what the O.P. is about) and they remain foolish theists.

I think one not only can, but should.

Bwahahahah!!
Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but that's it for me, I'm converted! Bwahahahahahahah!

Chuck, is this supposed to be evidence? Since others have tackled it item by item, I won't bother. I can't be arsed dissecting a bunch of half-baked, erroneous, false and dowright dishonest statements which seem to have their origin in a mind so uneducated about the subject that the author is writing about that their head has disappeared up their own backside.

Do you really think it makes any points? Do you really think it's an argument? Do you really think it's going to convince anyone? The entire thing looks like it's been taken from the pages of "Fundies say the darndest things". It's fantasic evidence against the creationist claim that creationism is science or that creationists have two neurones to rub together to keep warm.

Keep it up, Chuckieboy, you'll have everyone accepting evolution in a flash using shite like this.

Pardon me, myth, your slip is showing
My question is...what does a "typical" atheist believe in? (as far as where everything came from)

It may well be true that belief in God or gods is silly, ignorant, or foolish...but what do we have left? Certainly not chance.

RC Sproul writes:

We have a tendency in our day to think of mythology as a literary enterprise of primitive, ignorant, prescientific cultures. This tendency errs in two directions. On the one hand it is the nadir of arrogance for us to assume that ancient civilizations were primitive, ignorant, or prescientific. The Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians, Romans, and Greeks, for example, were anything but primitive or ignorant. They all achieved extraordinary levels of scientific advancement. Yes, they had mythology; but they had their serious science as well.
The second error is to relegate mythology to the past, making it an addiction practiced only by premodern cultures. On the contrary, mythical approaches to life and learning persist in every culture. Mythology continues to intrude in the arena of religion. It is commonplace in the superstitions that abound among athletes in professional sports. It is found in a host of medicinal home remedies that are often classified under the rubric of “old wives’ tales.”
Mythology also intrudes into the realm of science. Uncritically accepted hypotheses and theories of the past die a slow and reluctant death. We have seen the resistance the church has displayed against new advances in scientific knowledge, the Galileo episode being the most famous. But it is not only churchmen who offer resistance. Even in Galileo’s day opposition to him was heavily laden by scientists whose pet theories and accepted traditions were crumbling under the weight of new empirical evidence.
One myth that has found its way into modern thought and is entrenched in some circles is the myth of chance.

quote:
Chance as by definition mathematical probability is one thing. Chance as a factor in and of itself is foolish. Chance itself has the power to do nothing.

Sproul writes:

Mortimer Adler notes this new usage: “There is still a third sense of ‘chance’ in which it means that which happens totally without cause—the absolutely spontaneous or fortuitous.”
With the elevation of chance to the level of a real force, the myth serves to under-gird a chaos view of reality. Buttressed by inferences drawn from quantum theory, the idea that reality is irrational rather than coherent gained popularity.

and....(in defense of Theism as a logical alternative to chance)

When we say things happen “by chance,” the term by can be heard as a dative of means. Suddenly chance is given instrumental power. It is the means by which things come to pass. This “means” now assumes a certain power to effect change. Something that in reality is nothing now has the ability or power to do something.

The bottom line is, there is no better theory of how the universe came to be that has any bearing in reality than a Creator.

Edited by Phat, : No reason given.

Let's Compare
Chuck says that his list was a response to the Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian list, I reproduce it here:

Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

2 - You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

How does this list measure up accuracy-wise with Chuck's list? Looks pretty accurate to me. Chuck?
