I really do not know if the world will ever have a real picture of what the former Soviet Union has managed to cover up. Although I agree morality is not hinged on religion. But rather religion hinged to morality. Even if it seems not to be so. Using the USSR as a athiestic example of good moral behavior is sort of like saying "well they didnt have god and look they werent that bad."

The average person in the USSR wasn't a mass murderer. They were trying to raise their families and enjoy their lives as much as they could. Just like us.

I share your Christianity but not your understanding of the Bible. Can I suggest that God gave us intelligence, wisdom and enquiring minds. It seems logical to me that if they are a gift from God that they are a gift we should use. I agree that we have the Bible for a reason. Yes, I believe that God speaks to us through it but in order for Him to do that it isn't necessary for Him to have to dictate it. Remember, it is Jesus we are to worship and not the Bible. The Bible itself says that Jesus is the Word of God. Also, it seems to me that out of the gifts of intelligence, wisdom and curiosity we have come up with what we call science. Here is a verse from Romans 1:

IMHO science is simply a natural theology and as Christians we should be fascinated by what God has done and by what we have learned about what He has done through the scientific method. Cheers

When Paul converted so many to the infant church, he didn't just tell them that Jesus was Lord and Savior and that was that. He used evidence, telling everyone of Jesus' great works and of the miraculous events surrounding the end of his life on Earth. Evidence is important. Whenever, wherever and by whomever ideas are debated, facts and evidence are always at the core. If I wanted to convince someone of the ejection theory, how am I to do that if not with evidence? If someone were to ask me, "By what means did you become convinced of the ejection theory?" what would I say? He who can be convinced of something without evidence can be convinced of anything, which is the point of the Hitchens quote you don't seem to like. --Percy
