While at the site, I keep the "All Topics" page open in one tab, and read posts in a second tab. And I want that "All Topics" page to remain unchanged until I have finished reading all of the updated threads that I wish to read. It is easy enough for me to refresh the page when I am ready.

And why is the chat still displayed as empty in the chatting now bar while I'm logged on?
I think there's a time delay. There are periodic checks for who is in chat. What shows is who was in chat at the most recent of those periodic checks. And note that I am guessing here.

Only a little. But it does work.

If you are blocking javascript (as I do with "noscript"), then you have to allow scripting from addonchat.com.
​
I'm using linux. I have not tried from a windows box.
