I've just struggled through thousands of words of stupid trying to explain the 2nd law of thermodynamics to someone who claims that evolution violates it.
I finally realised the futility when I was informed that the Earth is an isolated system, the universe is an open system and that energy from the sun cannot reach the surface of Earth because of the atmosphere blocking it and that no planets with an atmosphere can ever receive any energy from the sun. Oh and when we see distant stars, we're not actually seeing the stars, we're seeing the light from them. How do you deal with this level of ignorance without losing the will to live? I'm open to any suggestion. I've been threatened with a ban if I repeat the "lie" that energy from the sun reaches the surface of Earth.

It's a Facebook group called "The Reliablility of the Bible Put to the Test". Yes, really, the reliabLility

The problem comes when an admin weighs in with a wall of text to prove our solar power denier correct. Honestly this shower have to be seen to be believed. The worst of it is that I'm a Christian, a Roman Catholic and a scientist which gives me a foot in both camps, yet the condemnation is strong. They're even banning pastors!

There is one particular admin who is the bane of everyone's life. He continues to go on and on about "regurgitating pablum which you haven't critically examined" (this on molecular biology which he hasn't studied, doesn't understand and in reply to a molecular biologist ie me), "you haven't done your due diligence", "historiographically sound historicity of the scholastic method" and his very favourites "you lie", "you twist", "you misrepresent". He's "proved" that any small amout of energy from the sun that reaches us can't be used to show evolution doesn't viololate the 2LoT because chloroplasts die. Also that by definition, energy input into a system can only increase the entropy. I'm losing the will to live!

You tell me, he's even made it onto the pages of FSTDT because of his fondness for using every derivation of history in three lines and the one sentence.

Here's a wee taster from FSTDT by this joke of an admin
"...if you read my first post carefully you will see that the axe-grinding comment was to Timothy who was trying to dismiss the scholastically-accepted historical fact that scholars who use the historical context via the grammatical historical method which relies on the critical realist approach to historiography for the historical part of the grammatical-historical method, accept the obvious conclusion on the genealogy of Mary being listed through Jospeh as was the custom of the time for the inheritance and land ownership purposes"

Last night someone who was arguing for a 6000 year old earth and a global flood supported their position by linking to information on ice ages dated to 11,000 and 14,700 years ago. Another genius tried to cast doubt on carbon-dating by pointing out problems specific to K/Ar dating then linking to a page which exposed the errors in the usual arguments against carbon-dating, so refuting himself.
Also we've had demands for the genealogy and trade records for the Neolithic period in Northern Ireland. Edited by Trixie, : No reason given.

And the crucial point is that the light is harvested by plants and converted into chemical energy stores. Then the food chain happens.

Did you know that hydrogen can be called water cos water contains hydrogen so they're the same thing and all the elements can be formed using water? So when God moved on the face of the water, he was really moving on the face of the hydrogen cloud, apparently and if repeated big bangs happen the universe (which isn't an isolated system) will consist of nothing but photons which proves that God made light.

Must admit Poe was my initial thought, but they actually seem genuine.
Now it turns out the Earth is older than the universe! Sheesh! Edited by Trixie, : No reason given.

It's a Facebook page called "The Reliablility of the Bible Put to the Test". If you go looking for it, don't forget to put in the extra "L".

I need to set the context for this little gem. We were discussing abiogenesis and someone claimed that there had never been any form of life which had/has an RNA-based genome, so I countered with RNA viruses. Back came this from the site's resident expert on life, the universe and everything, the one who loves to tell eveyone to do their due diligence.
Yeah, it's simple, the assumption which is unwarranted is the virus deposited the rna/dna into the human genome causing the disease, however, the far simpler, more plausible explanation is the other way around completely, the virus, which does not have a genetic code of it's own and takes on other organisms dna/rna, resulted as a pathogenic mutation from the existing genome. So it isnt rna based life, it is viruses doing their thing, borrowing genetic material from existing dna/rna in organisms. The bold italics are mine. When challenged about this the reply was
Viruses did not bring and deposit genetic material into the genome, they arose from it explaining the specific ERV loci and origins of pathogenic ERVS. Bear in mind that at no point was the evidence of endogenous retroviruses in support of evolution even being discussed.

I pointed that one out to them, Ringo, no-one seems to have got back to me on it. I don't know if I mentioned this earlier, but did you know the earth is three or four days older than the universe?

They don't accept the accuracy of ANY dating methods, not even layers in archaeology, with the lower layers being older.

The ironic thing is that they don't realise that eating bypasses the 2LoT.
