I got a widescreen monitor. Now to get my computer to work with it
I have tried updating the graphics driver: nothing.
Updated the monitor's drivers: nothing.
Was looking into updating the bios, but the only update available from the HP website claims to offer nothing more than an update for some boot order error that I've never had a problem with anyway...
Does anyone have experience making things like this work? Right now, I cannot get any widescreen resolutions. I am just using 1024768.
Specs:
Compaq Presario SR1230NX
Windows XP Home SP3
Monitor: Dell SE198WFP
Display: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
Motherboard: Asus Kelut 2.02 (A7VBX-LA)
BIOS: Phoenix 3.15
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Jon

Resolution settings
You should be able to set the graphics to 1440x900 @60hz.
Try "display properties" -> "advanced" -> "adapter" -> "list all modes". If you don't see 1440x900, then put it on the highest you can.

A little further down that page is a link to a possible driver fix. I'm not vouching for this stuff though... it's just what I found by google searching your problem.
Good luck.

New graphics card wouldn't hurt eventually
Might update your graphics card at some point as well.... I use a Nvidia GEforce 8800 GTX which runs Skyrim and such quite nicely in widescreen... and I see them on ebay now for like 25 ($40-$50). You'd want to be sure it will work/fit in that machine of course.

That seems to be what I'm finding out.
Get another graphics card.
No... not the bad news! Anything but the bad news...
Then again, maybe when I get myself some money.
Thanks for the help.

I'd be surprised if you have to spend more than 10-20$ for a used card (Theres no reason buying new hardware for an old machine like yours), with support for higher resolutions incl. widescreen, matching or surpassing your current card in performance.
Thanks for the help.
No problem! I LOVE delivering bad news.

Will there be an issue with my motherboard once I put in a new card, or will what my motherboard allows no longer matter?
I am not 100% sure how this all works as I've never run into this problem before.

Any card from that era or a year or two forwards will work.
Your motherboard has a few PCI slots, atleast 1 or 2 unoccupied, and a single, probably currently unoccupied AGP slot.
I assume you are using Windows XP? If you are, you will probably have to download the drivers manually before everything looks nice.
If you are using Win Vista and onwards, they have generic drivers that will do just fine.
If you are using Linux, you will learn to loath and love xorg.conf
