Sitting Down and Beach Volleyball
Finally, a gold in rifle shooting. Hurrah! It seemed that the point had been proven that the modern British athlete could manage to win a medal while remaining in an upright position for the duration of the event. Then doubt crept in. It occurred to me that they must take several shots in the final, and they quite likely spend far more their time sitting down between shots than actually shooting. So in some ways this seems the ideal sport for the relaxed modern British sitter. What's happened? We've known for a while that we're pretty much a nation of armchair sportsmen, but has the armchair mentality now invaded the field? Are the British, inventors of so many sports, now leading the world into a new exciting era in which pretty much everything will be achieved whilst sitting on our arses? At this rate, you might see me medal in a future Olympics (gold for speed reading novels whilst lounging on a chaise longue). Allow me to assuage your fears. I watched some of the shooting final, and they all stayed erect whilst waiting their turn to shoot. They actually all stand in a line, with the previous shooter walking to the back. It reminded me of school PE lessons for some reason. On a completely unrelated note - am I misunderstanding the beach volleyball tables, or do you actually get a point for losing? That reminds me of primary school even more - three points for a win, two for a draw, one for 'taking part'.

And now, napping for Canada, the indefatigable Dogmafood. Well the country of Montenegro whos citizens are the punchline for many jokes about being lazy like: A slovenian and a Montenegrin fall in to a pit. The slovenian asks what shall we do now? The Montenegrin replays you Slovenians always want to do something. They had a competition in laying still (for real no joke) and after 24 hours the 3 competitors decided to concede at the same time do to "health" reasons and split the money . In other words they where to lazy to lay still.

I was beginning to think that our track and field athletes might skip next week and turn up in wheelchairs at the Paralympics. As for the beach volleyball, I can't help you on the scoring, but free points or not, we seem to have been knocked out (no doubt due to the rather excessive standing requirements and absence of deckchairs in the playing area). Intrigued by bluegenes idea of a per capita medal table, and not having anything perticularly important to do in work, I thought I'd try and work out whose leading so far if you count by population. Frako will be pleased to hear that Slovenia are currently top of the per capita table, with one gold for every 2 million people (ie. the entire population) Here's the top ten, listing population per gold medal. Being English, I'm delighted to point out that Australia are only in 17th, Great Britain 11th, and the USA 14th. 1. Slovenia - 2.05 million 2. Lithuania - 3.19 million 3. New Zealand - 4.43 million 4. Georgia - 4.47 million 5. Hungary - 5 million 6. Kazakhstan - 5.53 million 7. North Korea - 6.01 million 8. South Korea - 7.14 million 9. Netherlands - 8.42 million 10. France - 10.89 million

got a second Bronze medal in shooting today. these where his 8th Olympic games and his 3d medal.

You didn't last at the top of the per capita table for long though. New Zealand just got two golds at rowing, which would put them above Slovenia. More importantly, though, the Czech rower took silver in the men's single sculls. That's two! Still nothing in the shooting, though, so I don't think this year will match Beijing.

Frank Boyce, the guy who wrote the script for the Olympic opening ceremony, origionally included a sequence on evolution because 'it was a British idea' but abandonned it because it looked too much like The Lion King. Which is a pity. But today our papers are full of photos and plaudits for Brits that are doing well at standing up sports. So that's all good.

Got a silver medal today damm was hoping for gold. Hammer throwing or what you call it. So far we have 1 gold 1 silver 2 bronze

Gold!
The Czech Republic got it's first gold, in rowing, and medals in shooting and tennis as well. I've never even heard of the women's doubles team that got the silver, but there you go.

some more gold!
Miss Ranomi Kromowidjojo got a second gold medal in the 50M Freestyle swimming event, and her teammate Marleen Veldhuis got the bronze one. Also, Dorian Rijselberghe won the gold medal in the RS:X class in sailing (basically windsurfing), although he wont receive it untill tuesday. Yay dutchies! Almost forgot, probably our most well known achievement in the olympics: Beatiful ladies playing field hockey. Edited by Huntard, : added nice picture gallery

Yep, as was I - having set the alarm early, and then couldn't get NASA TV to work  Raced downstairs, clicked about twenty different remotes to get the AV system working, then flicked news channels until found one not showing the Olympics - thank you CNN and your live feed. Just as she hit the atmosphere. Best seven minutes of recent years

Finsihing last in the final
So, when you're the Kazakh guy in the final of the men's canoe sprint, and you cross the line long after everyone else has finished, are you happy because you're one of the best eight canoeists in the world, or miserable because you're last?
