After spending the weekend at their place, I've become convinced that Obama will lose this upcoming election
After you have been away from that place for a few day, perhaps you will rethink that. It may well be a close election. I'm inclined to think Obama will win, though I am far from certain.

As a European living in the US I just don't understand why Obama still isn't miles ahead of Romney.

Take some time off from your geology studies. In that interval, take a class in Marxism. Once you find out what Marxism really is, you might discover that you have been brainwashed with a huge pile of bullshit. In particular, you might discover that there are very few Marxist professors. Just because somebody is not a raving lunatic right winger, it does not follow that they are Marxists.

I think we are now seeing the beginnings of this implosion. With Romney's selection of Ryan, we now see a stark contrast between two very different visions for America. One vision is that of an America that is for an elite super-rich tiny minority. The other vision of an America of the 99%, an America where all men were created equal.
