Re: Almost forgot...
I'm guessing you're thinking of this?
quote:
The couple, from Bedford, are now concerned Drew’s name will cause him problems in later life.
...
"But we don’t want to change his name. It is on his birth certificate and other documents.”
Because its bureaucratically awkward, they're going to keep it? I'm sure their son will thank them profusely once he goes to high school. "Sorry son, we realized the mistake 12 years ago - but someone had typed it onto a piece of paper by that point so...."

Hehe, along those same lines I knew a Dr. Mort, which could be translated to Dr Death (though I think more accurately as Dr. Dead, but that's less fun), it makes it less fun too to note he wasn't a medical doctor.

Poor Kids.
I once worked in birth registry, before being a physicist and I will always remember the following two names:
Logan Secret Fox.
Leo Bullocks. (Boo-locks)
I had to check if it was true by ringing the contact number, only to be greeted with "Hello, this is Ms. Bullocks".
I grew up with a kid called Toirdhealbhach, tourists always found it a tongue twister.

Re: Poor Kids.
I went to school with the Rhea sisters, Donna and Diana. Fortunately for them they had a very big brother.
There was also a guy named Rod Wiper.

Indeed, it's the classical/older version of the name. It would be Turlock in English, but in
Gaelic we say the modern version Tray-loch (ch like in Scots-English, throaty sound). However his name was: Tojz-yal-voch.
(I don't know how to put the jz sound in English, since it doesn't exist, its quite like the z in "azure".)

Re: Docs
Both Dead or Death would be acceptable.
Too bad he wasn't a medical doctor. Dr. Laterreur actually is a medical doctor... I can't imagine people's reactions hearing his name.

Although it isn't a funny-name story per se, my mother had a Close Encounter of the Weird Kind with bureaucracy.
All of her life she was called Katie by friends and family but she assumed that Catherine was her legal name. However, when the time came to apply for pension benefits, she was informed that she didn't exist. It turned out that she had been regisered at birth as Katie, so Katie was eligible for pension benefits, but every other government document listed her as Catherine, who had never been born. In the end, the dilemna was solved by legally changing her name to one or the other (I forget which), to synchronise the red tape.

Penn Jilettes kids
Penn Jilette has a boy named Zolten, which is a terrible name IMO.
His daughters name, Moxie CrimeFighter, IS kinda cool though.

we have the name Guy for men.
Though 'guy' meaning 'man' comes from the name I think, not the other way around (a bit like the way Joe is sometimes used especially in the US). Guy, the name, comes from Guido - meaning 'guide'.
Not intending my remarks to reflect on etymology, I was merely pointing out that some English-speaking men also have a name with the double meaning of 'male person'.
[qs]
We also have people named after every single capitalized word in the English Bible.
There's a lot of place names in there. And depending on your translation some other random words get capitalised too. Desert, in Genesis 21 along with Beersheba - neither of which I've seen being used. Nor have I seen Kibroth Hattaavah (Numbers 11). So I imagine this was hyperbole?
Perhaps a bit of exaggeration, but not much. I've known people named after the rivers flowing from Eden - to be general out of respect.
Folks here be real Bible-crazy.

Love your enemies!

Wouldnt Fryd sound like a weird version of Fred in English?
Compared to English Fred, Danish Fryd would actually be a pretty name.
How would a Marxist Communist erh.. Canadian like yourself pronounce Fryd?

At least Zolten is a slightly misspelt real name. 'Moxie CrimeFighter'? Really?
