"Perhaps we should fund the military by charitable giving and street collections, and the needy through our taxes."
What if, when you fill out your tax form and get the amount you owe or have already been deducted for, reaching the total tax obligation to the government, you then are asked to fill out a dispersal form directing which agencies get your tax money?
Some would 100% education. Some 100% military. Some 100% healthcare. Some 80% social security, 20% highways. Some might divvy it up equally.
Imagine the horrendous onslaught of TV commercials then! Wow: "Please send your tax dollar to fight cancer!" "Please save our local police forces!" "Put your wave-of-the-future dollar where it counts: drones!"...and so on.
