Re: Jumping Today - world record ballonn flight!
Right before Felix's chute opened, the narrator mentioned Joe K's free fall record, Felix was 20+ seconds away from the record when he opened his chute. I'm guessing that the chute opened automatically at a certain altitude and that the attempt to break the speed record meant forgoing the free fall duration record.
He was spinning pretty bad just before the chute opened. They had said that the shoot would automatically deploy during a spin if he went over a certain amount of G-force. I don't know if that's what happened or not, but that would be my guess.
The supersonic skydive was amazing.
I really enjoyed it. Hell, my stomach sank when he put he feet out and stood up, I can't imagine actually being up there.
And it was kind of funny how they kept screwing up the wind direction >.<
For all the crap companies get for marketing and advertising n'stuff, I'm happy to see Red Bull spending that kind of money on stuff that actually helps out.
Oh, and its a good demo on the power of the private sector too.

Scale of the jump
Just ran across this:
I have no idea of its accuracy, but some simple math makes it look about right.
Jump height = 120,000 feet
Diameter of Earth = ~42,000,000 feet.
That gives the height of the jump at just under 0.3% of the diameter.

Re: Scale of the jump
Ha, yeah...
Still though... it looked really-fucking-high from the camera on the capsule.
I guess it just goes to show how really-fucking-huge the planet is.
Gotta love NDT!

Re: Jumping Today - world record ballonn flight!
No, Felix managed to regain control of the spin himself, despite it being a very difficult task when encased in a pressure suit. But his visor was misting up to the point of being unable to see his instruments - in particular his altimeter. He deployed the chute because he could no longer be sure of how close he was to the target deployment height.
Hrm, I thought he was spinning again when the chute deployed. I remember him regaining control after spinning, and that image of him falling headfirst with his arms and legs dragging behind him was just iconic, but I thought he started spinning again just before the chute deployed. I may be misremembering. I'm gonna go look for a video.
