Which direction? Which philosophy?
By now, we have all heard the commercials...too many times. We have heard two out of three presidential debates, and we have heard our liberal and conservative (and ignorant) friends give their two cents as to who should be our next leader and why.
The House and the Senate are still up for grabs, so in this thread, as well as discussing the presidents, feel free to discuss local politics in the state in which you live.
Was The WHO right? Will the new boss be the same as the old boss?

Yo, Taz?
In the last political thread, you said

After last nights debate, have you changed your mind?

Re: Yo, Taz?
Last night helped me sleep again. But I'm still scared. Why? Because Romney blatantly lied so many times last night and nobody called him out on it. This country is filled with self-serving idiots and they'll swallow anything this sociopath will say. You know, if you vote for Romney he'll make you rich, too *wink wink*

All politics is local?
The House and the Senate are still up for grabs, so in this thread, as well as discussing the presidents, feel free to discuss local politics in the state in which you live.
Since California opened the primary process, this is the first time in the last few elections my representative to the House is running against an opponent. He'll still win, but at least this year I have a choice. Oh joy.
Also, we have the pleasure here of (mostly) being able to avoid the constant media ads for President. We all know who's going to carry CA. Since Feinstein is a shoe-in, we don't even have a Senate race to spend money on. Oh joy.
Mostly, I'm voting for our local government dweebs & weighing in on the props. My general rule for the last 8 years or so is to vote against all CA propositions - they must have a really compelling reason to get me to even look at why I should vote yes.
Obama is going to stay in the White House, and the Senate will barely stay w/ the Democrats. I wish the House would switch, but I doubt it will happen. Obama will have to dust off his personal skills of persuasion in order to get Boehner into the game, 2013.

Well since only about 67% of Americans are registered to vote and only 55% - 65% of that turns out to vote (numbers are probably lower than that) I'd say a good percentage of Americans understand how non-effective or impactful a president actually is.

Apathy?
I'd say a good percentage of Americans understand how non-effective or impactful a president actually is.
That's one possible explanation. There are others. For example regardless of whether you think that it makes any real difference whether Romney or Obama is elected, if you are a Democrat in say, Oklahoma, your vote, to a first order approximation is meaningless. Similarly, California Republicans might feel the same way about their votes.
Some people may simply be unexcited about their choices.
And of course there are the shameless attempts at voter suppression carried out almost exclusively by a single party that succeed in some cases.
Onifre, I think some people have reached the conclusion that a president is not impactful, but I think you are also engaging in a bit of projection.

Well, you may still have time to register to vote. Even North Carolinians can still register for early voting. State Registration Deadlines

Electoral Votes
regardless of whether you think that it makes any real difference whether Romney or Obama is elected, if you are a Democrat in say, Oklahoma, your vote, to a first order approximation is meaningless. Similarly, California Republicans might feel the same way about their votes.
Why did they adapt that whole Electoral Vote thing anyway? Is it a superior system over a popular vote?

Completely unscientific poll.
I arrived at the early voting "one stop" polling place at about 9:45 this morning. I'm thinking that at this time of day, it is too late in the morning to be voting before going to work and too early to be taking a lunch break. I thinking that the line is packed with the 47 per cent. I strike up a conversation with a retired, disabled veteran and his wife.
The line is wrapped round the building. My unscientific conclusion is that enthusiasm among the 47 per cent in this particular swing state (North Carolina) is quite high. I've heard similar stories about early voting in a few other states.
I do my good deed for the day and talk to a poll worker about finding a way to accommodate the disabled voters for whom waiting in line was an extreme hardship, and she goes off to tell the people out front to fix things. I thank the retired Viet Nam veteran for his service (a fellow Navy guy) and he thanked me for mine. Then I voted and put on my "I voted sticker".

It would seem to be an amalgam of state's rights and a parlimentary system. A Prime Minister is never elected directly, but is elected by representatives along party lines. In this case, the Electoral College serves as the parliment, but the president does not require a majority of the Electoral College, only a plurality. Also, the idea of independent states was much stronger at the birth of the US than it is now.

Perhaps, but the numbers I quoted show at the very least not much care for the political process. And if I am projecting, it's based on the evidence I've seen in my few years of life where I've seen little to no change everytime there's a new president.
We can surely say changes have been made in America, but they have ALWAYS started at the state level then eventually influenced the president. Civil rights, womens lib, gay marrigae, legalized medicinal marijuana, gun control, have all been state issues before any presdient has taking it to task to try and fix things. And in some cases, like gay marriage, there has been little change.
Voting for a president seems pointless. Voting for state reps on the other hands is very effective.

That reply was for onifre, who seems to really hate our voting process. I know what I said was politically incorrect, but if he dislikes our system so much, why is he even here? I'm sure there are plenty of spanish speaking places where citizens don't have a say who their emperor dictator is.
Added by edit.
Onifre is a comedian. Yes, I was just joking with him. I don't really believe he should get out of the country.
My question is why do comedians get a free pass for being assholes and yet the moment I made a politically incorrect joke I get a shitload of negatives?
