If his behavior is beyond what is acceptable here, then ban him for pete's sake, but this kind of ganging up on the guy is indefensible. Nobody is bullying FEY. If the guy is incapable of dealing with differing opinions then he has no place on a discussion forum. If I say something stupid then I fully expect to be corrected. While it is a little uncomfortable to have my ignorance exposed (on the very rare occasion ) it is far less uncomfortable than walking around with a head full of shit. Why else would someone come here if not to honestly examine their own beliefs?

I agree with you. I was thinking about doing the same thing but then that takes away from the validity of my cheers as an expression of my opinion regarding the post in question. As a bonus, if my rating falls low enough then some of the creationists might get the impression that I have said something that they might actually want to read. Also, a jeer seems to carry more weight than a cheer and so it doesn't entirely counter his flailing around. I appreciate the sentiment but it seems to be stooping to his level and depreciates the value of a valid cheer.I will remove my 'cheers'. Hey FEY did you see what happened there? A guy changed his mind and didn't lose one iota of integrity.

Forevers recent comments have disqualified him from even being considered as a potentially rational person. His behavior is completely trollish and should be treated as such. I think we are not very far from him returning to the threatening behaviour he exhibited before that got him previously banned.

Don't like jeers.
Never did--seems at least faintly embarrassing for grownups to be tossing jeers around like cooties. Wouldn't Agree/Disagree be better? More accurate, more mature, more in tune with the spirit of this forum, I'd think; and maybe total Agrees and Disagrees rather than "rank" members with a score. Almost anything else would be better. The current system is hurtful and divisive. It's cheers or nothing for me. Savvy? "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

I just use what we have. I'm not hung up on particular names.Wouldn't Agree/Disagree be better? I agree with many posts that I don't cheer, and I disagree with many posts that I don't jeer. I think we want these indicators to mean a bit more than routine agreement/disagreement. I do like the way that they are displayed. And I do like the ability to take them back if we reconsider and change our minds.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Percy originally has it as 'agree/disagree' but they got used as if they were 'cheers/jeers', so he changed the wording to more accurately reflect how they were used. Thanks, Panda.
Names matter. I'm unsure how "Disagree" could be used as a textual brickbat like "Jeers", especially since even a cursory glance at our posts suggests jeering is not contained by the Cheers/Jeers buttons. I suspect the history of usage here is little comfort to a newcomer who finds herself confronted by a dozen jeers. A jeer is a jeer. Despite the historicity, I'm at a loss to understand why a forum for serious discussion wants to encourage jeering: most of our moderation efforts are directed at containing that counterproductive activity. Part of civility is saying "I disagree" when what you are thinking is "You stupid ass." Civility and courtesy create a better experience for all, and, I think, a superior outcome for discussion. But I don't expect any changes, so I'll just stick with my cheers-only policy. Cheers, mate! "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

I suspect that it has more to do with the colour of the buttons. I'm unsure how "Disagree" could be used as a textual brickbat like "Jeers", especially since even a cursory glance at our posts suggests jeering is not contained by the Cheers/Jeers buttons. I wonder if changing it to "agree=blue" and "disagree=yellow" would make a difference? Omni writes:
I feel similar in regard to facebook. A jeer is a jeer. Despite the historicity, I'm at a loss to understand why a forum for serious discussion wants to encourage jeering: most of our moderation efforts are directed at containing that counterproductive activity. They have recently allowed members to 'dislike' (as opposed to 'like') facebook entries. It is optional and I have not opted in. Omni writes:
Percy has always been amenable to good suggestions. But I don't expect any changes, so I'll just stick with my cheers-only policy. Think of a good replacement system and run it past him. I wonder what others think about an 'agree only' system? Edited by Panda, : No reason given."There is no great invention, from fire to flying, which has not been hailed as an insult to some god." J. I too have a "cheer only" policy. (Disclaimer: I think I did jeer foreveryoung once but if I could find the post, I'd take it back.) I don't just cheer what I agree with though. I might cheer a post because it's funny or just because it's expressed well, even if I disagree with the content. I wonder what others think about an 'agree only' system? If I do disagree with the content, I'll either explain why or I'll shut the fuck up. I consider an empty jeer to be cowardly. I'd keep the jeer button for the same reason that peacekeeping troops carry weapons - as a demonstration that you can have weapons and not use them.

I cheer many post, but jeer few, I feel my jeers carry more weight.
I do often jeer stuff without responding, most the time I feel no explanation is needed, the post I jeered is explanation enough.Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' ― Isaac Asimov "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them" - Ray Bradbury
