Yeah, people generally only remember the 5/7/5 rule, but there are other conventions. The topic is usually nature-themed, and each line should be a complete thought or image in and of itself. Basically you want three evocative images, one on each line, that interrelate.
The Japanese form could also be construed as 5 characters per line. Here's a famous haiku, in Roman transcription: Furuike yakawazu tobikomu mizu no oto -Matsu Basho (long o), 1644-1694 Which means "An old pond"/"A frog jumping"/"Sound of water", the non-form respecting translation by Hiroaki Sato. If you respect syllables, here's a translation: The old pond is stilla frog leaps right into it splashing the water -Earl Miner But if you respect characters it's a little harder: swamptadpole plunk -Douglas Hofstadter

A syllable is a dominant vowel sound. Listen to yourself speaking and forming words. Consonants have no tone, but pick up the tone of the vowels around them. Each time you change vowel tone, that's a new syllable. Nope. You've lost me. Doesn't matter; I've never really 'got' syllables.

You've lost me. Doesn't matter; I've never really 'got' syllables. It's seriously not that hard. Crack a good dictionary and start examining words. You'll see a bunch of upside-down e's and stuff; refer to the beginning of your dictionary to see what sounds those represent. You'll see that each word is broken into segments. Each segment is a syllable. Each syllable has one vowel sound. (Not necessarily one vowel; sometimes vowels are combined into one sounds.) Each segment has some consonants. When you say a consonant by itself, they're usually toneless. Like, "s" or "k". When you put them near a vowel, they gain the tone of the vowel, like when you say "ek" or "is". When you change vowel tones in a word, you've changed syllables. Hopefully this helps. Learning to recognize syllables is crucial to the understanding of poetic foot and meter.

When I first learned we clapped to the words, you just have to find the beat. I've also heard syllables described as when the opposite side of you mouth meats, like your lips touch for the letter b. Also, each syllable is marked by your jaw going up and down.
