In two of those cases there were initial reports of a second shooter, at Connecticut and at Aurora. Anybody wonder why those second parties disappeared from the news?

That's possible of course but then wouldn't there be reports correcting the previous reports of another shooter and explaining the error? Instead there seems to have been a total absence of such reports.

I think that you're attributing far too much journalistic integrity to news channels. If in the initial chaos and activity of a huge breaking story they report a detail which subsequently proves untrue, there's not much incentive to subsequently correct it (unless they've slandered someone). They're there to fill airtime and sell advertising space, and there's no mileage for them in broadcasting the fact that they make mistakes sometimes.
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

quote: Generalizations are always dangerous but IMHO the Stand-my-Ground -type of laws are not rare in the US and they represent something that is horribly wrong. Some years ago we read about an exchange student who was shot in someones backyard. Shot and killed yet the shooter was never even charged. THAT IS WHAT THE ABUNDANCE OF GUNS HAS COME UP TO!! (sorry to have shouted). Gun-related violence has been normalized to the extent that people just shrug their shoulders and actually think that these thing just happen. Well, they shouldnt! In my country kids (adults too) can cut across a neighbors yard on their way home without ever even having to think that they might get shot. Why is that not a good thing?

I don't recall a mass shooting that wasn't eventually followed by a news conference where law enforcement laid out what they knew about the incident, including the number of shooters, perhaps you just weren't watching. Faith writes: I still think a teacher or two from each school should have a gun. I don't even know how to begin trying to tell you how alien and insane that sounds to British ears. Most of us here recoil at the idea of armed police!!!! The notion that teachers should go round carrying guns...... You yanks are fucking crazy man!!!
Faith writes: BUT schools could at least hire security guards. That's not too outlandish an idea, no need to deprive the millions of law-abiding citizens of their guns, just a little common sense here. Schools should have gun carrying security guards so that the general populace can all also carry guns. This is "common sense"....? (**Straggler shakes head in uncomprehending bewilderment at the lunacy of it all**)

other kinds of crimes are treated as trivial although they victimize innocent people and can ruin their lives.
Is there a crime more serious than murder?
The guy killing someone in the defence of his house is as bad as the guy breaking in.
Yes. But the guy killing in defence of himself or his family is not.Do you feel that the penalty for burglary is death issued through summary justice? Do you think there could be any scope for error in this situation? Ezekiel McCarthy killed nephew mistaken for burglar - BBC News To prevent the murders we've been seeing more and more of the solution is NOT gun bans and gun control.
where have we seen this?
The solution is to have some kind of security in place to stop such things from happening, whether that means allowing the arming of personnel or hiring security guards.
So.. Armed guards? armed teachers? armed janitors? armed children maybe? What kind of world do you want to live in? one where everyone walks around armed to the teeth teetering on the edge of a gunfight? you can watch westerns to get your fix of that. The crazies are choosing the locations where guns are not allowed because they can get away with their murders there but everybody irrationally screams MORE GUN CONTROl anyway.
So where do the crazies buy their guns?
... the second party could be a provocateur and the intention was to provoke the murderous rampage by the first and then disappear, and the ultimate objective is to kill the second amendment, to disarm the country and set us up for government or other tyranny. Yes, I suspect a conspiracy, could be wrong, could just be lone crazies, but I suspect it, largely because of this illogical but predictable cry for gun control after every such incident.
So... You think that gun control proponents are provoking/instigating mass shootings of elementary school children, in order to further the gun control cause. Are you serious? your paranoia is reaching crisis levels. You sure the catholic church doesn't have a hand in it somehow?
And now it looks like they are going to do it to us, they've got the momentum they wanted from this evil murderous rampage, they've got people crying for gun control over the most hideous nightmarish murder imaginable so they've got the excuse they've been looking for and they're now going to take some of our guns away from us.
If you have any compassion or respect for human life you must understand that taking guns out of circulation is the way to prevent death by gunshot. why is that not obvious to you? what kind of twisted mental blinkers to you need to engage for that not to be screamingly obvious.
But crime would GO DOWN if citizen gun owners' rights were defended instead of restricted to the point that guns aren't available or usable when needed.
So in order to prevent burglaries you think it's ok to sacrifice the odd 20 schoolchildren here and there? is your TV or jewellery really that important to you? What did Jesus have to say about that?

Hello Straggler:
Did you watch the video where UK citizens who had been deprived of their guns talked about how they feel they've been victimized by their government? Message 374 Same thing in Australia. Message 377 Are you aware of any of the history of the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms? We got it from you. If there are laws that favor criminals obtaining weapons, those need to be changed.
The problem is that when this subject comes up it's the law-abiding citrizens who are targeted by the gun control fanatics. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. He who surrenders the first page of his Bible surrenders all. --John William Burgon, Inspiration and Interpretation, Sermon II.

And that gives you an excuse to take the guns away from millions of other law-abiding citizens, right? You'd all prefer that to arming a few principals and teachers or installing a security guard in every school and business.
Point stands: tighten laws that make it easy for criminals to get guns. Leave the upright citizens alone. We have the Second Amendment for very good reason. The UK and Australia are now in terrible shape because of their gun bans. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

that when the UK and Australia were disarmed crime went up, particularly home invasions, Did I miss some stats being posted on this?
Yes, I suspect a conspiracy, could be wrong, could just be lone crazies, but I suspect it, largely because of this illogical but predictable cry for gun control after every such incident. Seriously, Faith. I appreciate you letting us peer into your head, but this is beyond irrational. In fact, your entire post is pretty much in line with every caricature the most rabid gun control advocate has ever had of a gun nut. One thing that we can note here is that Lanza's Mom had plenty of guns at her house. Those guns which were used by her son to kill her at home.
Faith writes: and they're now going to take some of our guns away from us. Boo, hoo. It' possible that Congress will target those guns or magazines that let you "Mix em and cook em in a pot like gumbo." (My apologies to NWA)
Faith writes: but all people here care about is the specific number of deaths Yikes. How Old Testament of you not to care. I don't want to create the impression that your post is among the nuttiest stuff we are going to encounter. Here is some even more ridiculous stuff from gun nuts who will push anything other than controls on guns.

the point is that tightening gun availability for criminals would not have prevented Connecticut, or aurora or most of the other mass shootings, as the perpetrators were not criminals.
