The administration can dismiss the petitions fairly easily. I definitely agree that it is a humorous route for people to show they are upset. As far as rights being infringed, I am not agreeing that this is what is happening. I am simply stating that when specific individuals feel this way, this is the reaction our citizenships seems to react with. Such as, "That's fine, take away our guns, we will just leave." It is quite ludicrous to think the Government will allow this to even happen, but I find it even more ludicrous that this is how people react to the slightest inclination of not receiving their way.The theory of evolution by cumulative natural selection is the only theory we know of that is in principle capable of explaining the existence of organized complexity. -Richard Dawkins Creationists make it sound as though a 'theory' is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night. -Issac Asimov If you removed all the arteries, veins, & capillaries from a person’s body, and tied them end-to-endthe person will die. -Neil Degrasse Tyson What would Buddha do? Around thirty-five years ago, give or take, here in Saskatchewan we had a movement (two guys, as far as I know) called the Unionest Party (no, that is not a typo) which wanted, apparently, to allow the U.S. to join us. So, give us your loyalists, your royalists, your fugitive slaves, your draft dodgers... and anybody else who's yearning to breath free.
The only drawback I can think of is the average daytime temperature of minus a million.

Didn't his own Republican party, under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, decisively refute that argument?

Hi tesla,
... If one state was to leave, it would bring other states into questioning such a value, and turn into a mess really quickly. OR it could offer an alternative to those who are dissatisfied with the federal government: move to Texas. They have lots of room and it could provide sufficient boost to their economy to pay the US for the federal assets that they would need to buy\reimburse (a process that would cool the heels of copycat states). It could be done as an experiment, Enjoyby our ability to understand Rebel American Zen Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Hi Coragyps,
We would have even more loonies than we have now!!!! So you could sell your property (with a lot of potential new buyers) and move to a more reasonable state. The question is where would you most like to live? Personally I don't see any great attachment to a piece of land, but that may be due to my moving so much. There's a great misconception that Texas is a homogenous character but if you look at the county by county 2012 Presidential returns a different picture emerges. The counties that went for Obama included cities like San Antonio, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, Beaumont, Alice, Kingsville, Austin and almost all of the Valley.

Hi jar,
There's a great misconception that Texas is a homogenous character ... No state is homogeneous, as far as I know, but it sure seems that the evidence of your legislature, federal reps, recent governors and presidential candidates all point to being ill informed on reality. It may actually improve your sanity to move away from such influences. I know I was happier away from Mississippi and evangelical western Michigan ... ![]() Enjoy.by our ability to understand Rebel American Zen Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Hey, I live in the home town of Lloyd Bentsen, one of the very liberal areas in the state.

It could. But it is unlikely to play out that way. The Federal government would not willingly grant it, and if it was granted, many other states may decide to join Texas as a new nation. Hence the ‘mess’. It could go many different ways, even as you suggest, but it's a dangerous experiment, because the true impact cannot be ascertained until after the fact. Hindsight is 20/20, but despite that we do not have any more foresight than we have ever had, as variables are in constant change, as are the minds of the people.keep your mind from this way of enquiry, for never will you show that not-being is ~parmenides

... Hence the ‘mess’. Why? Why should the federal government always be lumbered by restrictionists preventing progress? Why should the federal government always be lumbered by restrictionists preventing progress? Oh I agree, I agree, why should you? For myself I'd like to divvy the whole nation up between "restrictionists" and "progressives" and let each section govern itself. I SO wish it were possible.

If I were made supreme dictator of the US I would suggest the following solution.
I would join the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Mississipi, and Louisiana into a single state and name it Alabamastan. I would then announce that Alabamastan would be seceding from the Union with a few requirements. First, no safety nets. No government could be formed in Alabamastan if it allowed for Social Security, Medicare, or any social programs that caused the rich to support the poor. Second, anyone can own any weapon they please. Third, no restrictions on pollution or anything that the EPA would deem unsanitary. Fourth, once the borders are closed no immigrants are allowed in. Fifth, and finally, everyone has to wear clown shoes on Thursdays. I am the supreme dictator and this would make me giggle, so I command it be so. How many people would want to live in Alabamastan (assuming that I may be flexible on the fifth requirement)?
