I would like to know of a place where grown-up discussions on world politics and world-happenings are discussed, and the comments are strictly moderated like they are here. The political side of the internet is a mess of insults, disingenuousness, and childish behaviour in general. But there MUST exist a place somewhere where people from all sides of politics are discussing things in a civilized way. Anybody here know of such a place?

There used to be one. Same software. It was called 'Politicus Maximus'. What Happened to Politicus Maximus?

I would imagine that such a forum might exist, but it might need to be in an alternate universe. I don't follow Canadian politics - I have seen a few things that suggest you have some, erm, points of contention up there - but here in Texas rational discourse just does not happen. There are about forty of us left-wingers outside of Austin, Houston, and the Rio Grande Valley, and many, many vocal ultra-rightists everywhere - and we don't much get along with each other. I occasionally try to have a discussion, but end up disengaging after only a start. If you get called names immediately, you can pretty much tell that it won't end well......

Hi Coragyps, I am in the same boat just North of Austin near Temple,Belton, Killeen. There are moderates but we are labled by dyed in the wool republicans as socialist commies. Civil discourse is impossible. I just do not bring up politics unless it is in like company. I made the mistake yesterday when in the bar a person was complaining about President Obama. I said would she like things to go back to the way things were at the end of the Bush administration? She said yes. I pointed out the economy seems to be getting better, the stock market on the upswing, the housing market improving, car industry making profits, etc.. She looked at me like I was growing horns. Alberta, eh? I thought you guys only had one side there. (I'm right next door in the stubble field, where we take our politics quite seriously and are also quite civilized in a backwoods kind of way.)

We've often discussed and debated politics and policy here. Jump right in. "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

Thank you everyone for your inputs. These replies confirm what I was afraid of: Politics + anonymity seem to bring out the childishness in people! Omni: As for "Jumping right in", I would love to, but politically speaking, I'm not that well informed, and so would prefer to lurk until a question or issue popped into my head, you know? My intention here is to learn and grow, etc. Again, thank you all. Edited by Dubious Drewski, : No reason given.

Thank you everyone for your inputs. These replies confirm what I was afraid of: Politics + anonymity seem to bring out the childishness in people! Especially Republicans, 'cos they're poopyheads.
