Apostle, I can't remember any details but I have read some material that suggests you are correct about Lamarck. It might be too bad he didn't hire a better PR guy in the first place. He made one little mistake and now he's hung with it forever.

Re: Responding to Natural Selection Comments
Hi Apostle,
I agree with most of what you say. However, I do think Lamarck was regarded as a great scientist. Much the way one can criticize Aristotle for being wrong on many counts, that does not detract from his having been a great thinker. The problem is that much of history, and most of scientific history is presented as sound bites so you only get headlines like (Lamarck wrong about evolution) rather than an overview of his career. Here is a site about Lamarck
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/lamarck.html
cheers,
M

Re: Responding to Natural Selection Comments
Mammuthus,
I also think Lamarck is regarded as a great scientist. When I said that he was often not given his due, it was mostly in reference to the fact that a great many creationist pieces of literature attempt to discredit him almost completely because of his beliefs concerning pangenesis. As a creationist myself, I try very hard to not fall into these traps also. I dont feel one gains much by attempting to destroy the image of an intelligent man. Granted, such attacks are also shown in evolutionary literature. That is someone else's problem and so I can only worry about myself.
I breifly skimmed over the Lamarck page you posted a link to. It looked interesting and I will enjoy reading it at a later date.
Apostle
